Sup y'all.
Just signed up for this board here, been trolling the last month or so reading etc. I've just decided to get into the Sport Compact scene here. I'm looking at the '98 Dodge Neon as a baseline for my car project as it combines all of the elements that appeal to me: the sleek sporty styling of SPOCOM rides with the convenience of having a domestic vehicle for parts availability.
Whats gotten me into SPOCOM? Well, I'm sick of my 1990 Ford Thunderbird SC, its a monetary sinkhole. I just cannot seem to get a head with the car, something is always going wrong with it so I never have a chance to upgrade things I would like, that and its expensive on Gas.
Secondly well Autocross, which is really what I would like to do on my weekends. That and the occasional weekend rally racing.
So at the end of July I will be shopping for a 98/99 Neon, (1st gen because i cant seem to find a 2nd Generation Neon in my area that is 2dr and 5spd :/). Plus the numbers for the 98 are not too bad, 150 hp and 133 tq on the DOHC motor. Plus the 1st gens prior to the 98 model I hear had a known weakness for blowing head gaskets, much like my TBird which has now gone thru 3 sets of head gaskets.
Just one question I can't seem to find a solid answer too, IIRC there was a post on here somewhere where someone asked a question about the engine and if it was the same in a few other cars, and someone mentioned that the air filter was located on the rear of the engine, is this so for the 98's?
Anywho, in the coming months I will be no doubt coming here as a 1st source of information, well aside from my old neighbour who is a master Chrysler/Dodge mechanic
, and I shall be logging all of my endeavors with the Neon.
Oh, PS another reason im getting into SPOCOM is me and a couple of friends have decided to begin a racing club for autocross/rally here locally, called Urban Monkey Warfare, (Yes the name is derived from the KMFDM song title
)
Oh also, anyone have an idea where I can research Dodge ECU upgrades?
Anyway, catch yall on the flip side.

Welcome to the site!! So happy to have you here. First of all... Dodge doesn't have ECU... we have PCM... hehehe!!
That might help with your search. If you are talking a Mopar Performance PCM, I can likely get you a price and availability on it. Is that the only Neon you were looking into? Looks like it's in great shape for being 6 years old...

Here is a picture of my 94 Ram Modified (of course), her name is The Lady In Red, and I posing together:

My newest toy, Ms Shelby - 87 Daytona Shelby Z:

And this is half mine... 99 Ram 4x4 Quad Cab, Mr Blue:

Again, so glad to have you here and hope to see you often!!
