You guys seem to know ur stuff a little bit better and im stuck in the middle of a project and for the most part those guys dont seem to know much about their cars(wont post forum). But Im trying to pull of the rear differential cover on a 1996 trooper, isuzu does everything super backwards(literally, for instance the clutch systems) but in this case the cover to the rear diff is on the inside and part of where the driveshaft hooks up to the axle. Its a 12 bolt cover, so theres the pumpkin and then the cover with the seal and driveshaft gear on the inside. I have unbolted the driveshaft and the cover, but it wont budge, it game a tiny bit loose but thats it. There is the large 34mm nut still on, I have no removed that because I dont have a breaker bar at the moment, I have marked it etc, but I will have to go get a breaker bar, but before I take that off I wanna make sure thats the problem, cause I dont see why it would still be on there. Is all I can think is maybe I need to pull the shafts from the brake discs to release? but I dont think that would make much sense. Anyone have any ideas?

The best advice I can give you is to buy a service manual. My guess though is that it must be that nut still holding the cover on.
Also, there shouldn't be oil on or in the driveshaft. Do you mean the grease on the U joint?

the axle shafts need to be removed from the axle housing before the center section can be removed, the gear oil always smells bad too me

Sounds like the "cover" isn't actually a cover but is a carrier like the ford 9" rears. If this is the case the axles need to be pulled out to remove it and all the gears will come out with it. It will be heavy.

to drain the fluid, there should be a drain plug in the bottom.
to remove the carrier(differential)
put it up on jack stands.
remove wheels.
unbolt axles (probably disconnect brake lines, cables, abs...)
slide axles out a little/maybe all the way. be careful not to put weight on the seal, or damage it in any way.
remove drive shaft.
pull carrier out from the front. its heavy.
why are you removing the carrier? is it bad?
