New NHRA Record!
I just saw where Charlie Wescott set a new record in SS/AA at 8.62 and 152.97. This is in a 1968 naturally aspirated, carbed, no computer, stock bodied (they had some factory fiberglass pieces), 426 cu. in. Hemi Barracuda. He ran 8.566 the week earlier but the event didn't qualify for setting NHRA records. Amazing!
Doesn't he run in NSCA? NHRA SS/AA is a different animal. Different rules, different restrictions.
SS/AA is A Stock Automatic in NHRA. They have very strict rules. There were 50 Hemi Barracudas and 100 Hemi Darts made in '68. Hurst was contracted to specially build these cars for Chrysler. They are to this day the fastest accelerating production cars ever made. Of course, they were built only for drag racing and you had to be somebody to get one. They were delivered without paint, no exhaust, skinny tires and had a sticker that said they were not for street use. A set of slicks and you could easily run 10s. If you can find an original one, they go for well over $100K, maybe more. There are a lot of clones out there. Anyway, they dominated their class from day one and are still the only two car models running SS/AA or SS/A (manual trans). Hitting mid 8s under the rules of their class is phenominal to say the least!

Sorry, didn't mean to lecture. I just got carried away. I've always loved the Super Stockers.
I saw Dan Dye run at the "Mopars at the Strip" event last year in Las Vegas. I think he ran somewhere in the 7s at around 210 mph, give or take. It was quite a sight to see Dan's sort of stock appearing Cuda go ripping by that fast. There were also two Vipers there running about the same numbers. One had a Hemi V-8 in it and the other was V-10 powered. We parked our RV at the finish line to watch the races. We sat there under the awning in our chairs with a cold drink and a cool desert breeze. One of those perfect moments in time that you want to freeze and keep forever.

he was running KOS..im not familiar enough with the ProStock rules to be sure if that was the set of rules that he complies with, but it very well could be. the silver one was on the cover of MCG a few issues back.
