Some Bud Shootout Stats...

2004 Budweiser Shootout Nuggets: 2004 Speedweeks marks the 26th running of the Budweiser Shootout. The "Budweiser Shootout," held since 1979 (formerly named the "Busch Clash" and "Bud Shootout"), is a non-points event that has been the Cup season-opening race at the "World Center of Racing" one week before the Daytona 500 since its inception in 1979. The former 25-lap sprint among the winning drivers of the "Bud Pole Award" from the most recent season was reformatted to 70 laps in 2001 and now includes past champions from prior "Busch Clash" and "Bud Shootout" events.
Back of the Pack: Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s 2003 Bud Shootout win from the 19th starting position is the worst start of a Shootout winner.
Manufacturers Dominance: Dale Earnhardt's Jr.'s 2003 Shootout win marked the 13th Chevrolet victory in the 25th Speedweeks opener.
By the Numbers:
Most Shootout starts - Bill Elliott - 18
Most current consecutive Shootout starts - Mark Martin - 15
Most Shootout starters - 22 (2002)
Least Shootout Starters - seven (1981)
Three-Time Shootout Winner?
Fifteen drivers have won at least one Shootout. Dale Earnhardt's six wins are the most of all drivers. No other driver has won more than twice.
Starting Up Front:
The Bud Shootout has been won from the pole three times, Darrell Waltrip (1981), Bill Elliott (1987) and Ken Schrader (1989).
Daytona 500 Momentum - The winner of the Bud Shootout has won the Daytona 500 in the same year five times, including three in the last eight seasons.
Dale Jarrett (1996 and 2000)
Jeff Gordon (1997)
Bill Elliott (1987)
Bobby Allison (1982)
One to Go: The Bud Shootout has been won on a last-lap pass five times; most recently by Dale Jarrett (2000).

Jarrett wins Shootout with help from Earnhardt!

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Dale Jarrett is back out front.

Jarrett charged from 10th place in a seven-lap sprint Saturday night to win his third Budweiser Shootout, holding off favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. after his good friend helped Jarrett get to the front on the last of the 70 laps.

It was a dramatic start for the 1999 NASCAR champion, coming off the worst season of his career.

"I don't even want to talk about that now," Jarrett said. "I've got to thank my buddy Dale Jr. He was knocking the devil out of the rear bumper and that's probably what I needed to get up there.

"The last two times we won this thing, we won the Daytona 500 and I'm really looking forward to next Sunday."

Earnhardt, who won the made-for-TV race for the previous year's pole winners and former Shootout champions a year ago, came up 0.157-seconds -- about two car-lengths -- short of doing it again.

"I was helping him and he was helping me and that's how we got up there," Earnhardt said. "I tried to beat him in that last lap, but I couldn't catch him."

The sprint race at the end was set up by a 13-minute, 40-second red flag stoppage brought out when Jeremy Mayfield and Dave Blaney, running 1-2 at the time, crashed coming off turn two on the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway oval.

Mayfield, who had taken only two tires on his last pit stop, slid up into Blaney and both cars slammed the concrete wall. Mayfield's car did considerable damage to a metal gate in the wall and that prompted NASCAR to stop the race while repairs were made.

Default RE: BUD SHOOTOUT NEWS!!!

An awesome showing by Jamie McMurray in the #42 Havoline Dodge in the Bud Shootout... The car he used tonight, which one the first segment of the Shootout, was in fact the "infamous" car, Sterling Marlin used in the 2002 Daytona 500, where he and Jeff Gordon got into it w/ a few laps left and a red flag that brought out the cars to stop on the back strech also brought out Sterling Marlin out of car to pull on a fender (passenger front) that was rubbing and he was sent to the back of the lead lap pack.

Jeremy Mayfield also put on a great show until his accident w/ Dave Blaney. Rusty Wallace, looked like he could have won it, if he would have had more drafting help by Kevin Harvick, but even though a Ford did visit victory lane, it was nice to see a smile on Dale Jarrett's face once again!
