Dale Earnhardt Tribute
One birthday I'll never forget. 2/18/2001. I was at my parent's house celebrating a good day with them, my wife and kids watching the race when that happened. I left my mom and dad's shortly after the race not knowing the extent of the wreck. I found out shortly after we got home what happened on ESPN. I sat in shock for a good hour. It's kind of weird, and probably stupid but a week after it happened, ESPN had a dedication film with music and his career highlights, race clips, pics with Jr and his other kids and wife, and I fricking wept! A 29 year old man! Nobody here knows me so I can admit it.
I've made it through family member's funerals before without crying for god's sake!
I'm a fan.

I wasn't a true fan, but I did respect the man. Watching the race in which he died, I was stunned. Nobody had any idea at the time.

That was the first Daytona 500 I watched live, I've seen other wrecks that were a lot worse I didn't believe that he died. Ironic that it was 3 years later when I had money to go to the Daytona 500 and Earnhardt Jr won.

I got to see Dale in his last Brickyard run in person. He was about 20 feet away handing out autographs. I didnt have anything left for him to sign so I wasnt able to get one. It was really cool just seeing the guy in person though, he was very cool and talked to everybody.
Just goes to show to all NASCAR drivers that you need to use the HANS restrainin' device. I've seen much worse and drivers stand up, stagger, and then walk away. I was at my auntie's when it happened. Cousin turnin' 21. They didn't show the whole extent, but my cousin came runnin' down the stairs when I was leavin' and said he died. I basically was in shock durin' the ride home. It honestly didn't hit me 'til the next day. This sunday is daytona and hopefully we'll see somethin' done in his memory. Great driver and man.
At the end of the TV broadcast, they showed a shot of the first aid vehicle taking Dale to the hospital.......they were driving slow.....that was kind of creepy.........
