That was a great, great man. You either loved him or hated him.

R.I.P. Dale.

One birthday I'll never forget. 2/18/2001. I was at my parent's house celebrating a good day with them, my wife and kids watching the race when that happened. I left my mom and dad's shortly after the race not knowing the extent of the wreck. I found out shortly after we got home what happened on ESPN. I sat in shock for a good hour. It's kind of weird, and probably stupid but a week after it happened, ESPN had a dedication film with music and his career highlights, race clips, pics with Jr and his other kids and wife, and I fricking wept! A 29 year old man! Nobody here knows me so I can admit it. I've made it through family member's funerals before without crying for god's sake!

I'm a fan.

YOu're not alone. I was putting in a HU in my truck after the IROC race that day. My gf called and said that he died but I didnt believe her. I went in the house and checked and there was nothing on TV about it. Couple of minutes my dad came out and told me it was true. I sat in my truck and stared at the dash for a long time too. I watched everything they had on TV about him. I cried too. There is nothing wrong with admitting that. We're human.

I wasn't a true fan, but I did respect the man. Watching the race in which he died, I was stunned. Nobody had any idea at the time.

That was the first Daytona 500 I watched live, I've seen other wrecks that were a lot worse I didn't believe that he died. Ironic that it was 3 years later when I had money to go to the Daytona 500 and Earnhardt Jr won.

I've never been a "fan" of Earnhardt. The man could race his butt off, but like Richard Petty, I never really was a fan of the man. I grew up on Davey Allison and when he died, I quit following NASCAR for a while. When I got back into it, a guy by the name of Jeff Gordon was in his rookie year and being that he represented Indiana to a certain point, I rooted for him.

I got to see Dale in his last Brickyard run in person. He was about 20 feet away handing out autographs. I didnt have anything left for him to sign so I wasnt able to get one. It was really cool just seeing the guy in person though, he was very cool and talked to everybody.

Just goes to show to all NASCAR drivers that you need to use the HANS restrainin' device. I've seen much worse and drivers stand up, stagger, and then walk away. I was at my auntie's when it happened. Cousin turnin' 21. They didn't show the whole extent, but my cousin came runnin' down the stairs when I was leavin' and said he died. I basically was in shock durin' the ride home. It honestly didn't hit me 'til the next day. This sunday is daytona and hopefully we'll see somethin' done in his memory. Great driver and man.

At the end of the TV broadcast, they showed a shot of the first aid vehicle taking Dale to the hospital.......they were driving slow.....that was kind of creepy.........
