There are three or four bolts on the backside of the knuckle, that hold the hub in place. Pull those, and you can take the hub/axle out of the knuckle. Gives a bit more room.

Axle nuts are torqued to north of 180 ft/lbs..... They can be a real bear to break loose.

Maybe take it into a shop where they have truly mean air tools. Heavy truck repair shop would be able to get it off without a problem.

You need at least a 3/4 drive for that. I have a 3/4 drive elcheapo set and it works every time.

i had the same issue a few years back. i went and bought the righ size socket in 3/4 drive (craftsman from sears had it) then bought a 1/2 to 3/4 adapter. used a 4 ft fencing pole as a cheater to put around my breaker bar. worked like a top.

Thanks guys should have no problem with the nut now but this morning to gain access to our lawn mower I had to back the truck up 2 feet and the inner axel shaft broke at the ring :/ so with it being a dana 44 could I just go rip one off any other dana 44 dodge ram?

Probably. Take the old one with you though, and compare sizes, and spline counts.

It may help to get the info off the axle and compare it with the one in the yard. Not sure if they changed and when.
