Default Only works in 4x4?

Hello all I have a 2005 dakota 4x4 AWD, when the vehicle t-case is selected to awd the vehicle will not move forward and grinds when trying to place it in reverse, on a side note in awd when placing the vehicle in park and shutting it off, the vehicle will still move forward or backwards if pushed, when engaging 4x4 it clunks hard from the tcase but everything works normally and if I place the vehicle in 4x4 when sitting still with the engine off it goes in to 4x4 no problem and starts and operates no problems. Any thoughts?, all I ca think of is the 4x4 shift motor is not fully engaging the tcase

Thank yyou

Either that, or one end or the other of your drivetrain has a serious issue.

Seeing that everything works normally in 4x4, I assumed the shift solenoid is not returning it to awd or gears are shot for awd

In AWD, there is a differential in the t-case that allows front/rear drivelines to spin at different speeds. (cornering....) If one end, or the other, is not actually driving the vehicle, for whatever reason, then you won't go anywhere in AWD.

Does the dash indicator think you actually are going into AWD?
