Exclamation Help, Crazy Codes/ Electrical. Durango is possesed!

Sooo,

My instrument cluster is acting crazy, SVC 4WD light on, airbag light comes and goes, battery light will flash and the tacks will drop. When the tacks drop the radio restarts. The Interior lights work with the buttons, but do not turn on when the door is opened. The doors wont lock with automatic lock button unless the key is in the on position.

Told this to a mechanic and he suspected it was the FCM, Foward Control Module. So, got one and put it in and nothing changed. FCM does not need to be re-flashed is what the dealer told me.

Then I Took it to the dealer to get any stored codes pulled off of it. Check engine light not on.

The codes it gave were U0019 and U0023, CAN B Comm (+) high.

Absolutley no clue what the CAN b bus system is other than all the modules tying into eachother.

When he had it on the computer i could see all the modules and they were all flickering on and off line here and there, no one module was just doing it.

All fuses are good, dont know where to go from here. New Instrument Cluster? Body Control Module? is the cluster actually the BCM??

Help

-Scott

https://dodgeforum.com/forum/dodge-d...s-section.html

this section is dead (i am the only one who reads it) if you tell us what year truck we are looking at i can move it for you and get you some help.

it honestly sounds to me like the CTM (it controls all of the electronics in the vehicle, and the remote locks ect, and it DOES need to be programmed by the dealer)

dude, as i said in your other thread, we need more information on the truck, at a BARE MINIMUM WE NEED THE YEAR OF THE TRUCK.

ALSO: you posted twice now in the same section, and this section is VERY DEAD, i am the ONLY PERSON who reads it, i will move it to the correct section for you as soon as you tell us what year truck we are working on.

also i am going to merge your two threads because they are exactly the same, please do not post another thread on the same topic

Try removing the left kick panel and inspect the wires there and take a look at the wire harness coming thru the bulkhead near the park brake lever.

This may sound stupid, but how old is the battery? Dying batteries do weird things to Chrysler vehicles, sometimes just random electrical issues. When we bought my wife's 2006, it's battery was on the verge of death (very weak). It wouldn't have lasted another winter.

Batter was new in July 2010. Now all of a sudden none of my rear lights work, no running light, no brake lights and no reverse light

I mean the plugs look fine, and the wire harnesses. Nothing out of the ordinary

Scott:

Thanks for the info update. It is crucial to know year, model, engine, etc before anyone can begin to help.

First off, have your battery load tested and assure that the connections are clean and tight.

The Gen 1 Durangos had the CTM. The Gen 2's have the FCM as well as a boatload of other computers to include the instrument cluster.

I was amazed at how much more the cluster does in my Gen 2 verus the 01 SLT I used to have. Among other things, would you believe the power for the night lights comes from it?

Issues like these can be a real bear, so hopefully it will not be a nightmare for you.

Don

Hey, I have a dodge durango 2004 limited with sunroof, I was getting similar codes about the CAN B bus failures. As the previous posters wrote, it can be a loose harness but more often it is a leak somewhere into the body.
The rubber gaskets and seals (talking about weather seals here) on the 2004 durango from the factory are prone to drying, shrinking, and cracking.

In my case the CAN bus errors were because the sun roof drainage got clogged and it was leaking water into the frame from the top.

I have no schematic drawings to go by, but you might want to check your weather seals for any leaks into the frame. Parts of the frame can fill up with water and cause the car to act like its possessed. My car was doing the exact same thing, lights turning on in the middle of the night (haha), the alarm randomly going off, dashboard lights going dead while on the highway, all the lights flashing on and off, the car not turning off and literally having to pull all the fuses from the ignition system just to get the car to turn off. I tried to tell my mechanic this and he asked me if he could get some grateful dead stuff I was on. The reason was that the battery would die because the water was grounding some current to the frame and it would clear all the codes out, so every time he code checked it, it was clear.

I forgot to say that when the lights would turn on randomly at night (around 3am) my girl would run around the house saying that satan has possessed the vehicle and go grab her stolen Gideon bible from a hotel, it did make me laugh for a few months but this problem had confounded me for awhile.
