tire purchase? local shop or online

Shipping beats the crap out of tire prices though..... even buying retreads, by the time its all said and done, you could have gotten new tires. Even getting a good price on the tires, you still have to pay for mounting/balancing, and possibly a tire disposal fee to boot (to the head.). When I looked at it, I saved less than a hundred buying online..... Better bet would be finding a good price on the tires you want, then going to a local store that does price matching.

Do a little bit of both. Find a local shop around you that will price match ANY tire you want. Look around online and find yourself something you like for a good cheap price then print that out and take it to the shop. I got a set of cooper zeon ltz's for 164 a tire. and that was for a 285-70-20. Normal price through the shop was 238 a tire.

I just recently used the BEST online tire and install site this past month.
www.tirebuyer.com
Prices beat tirerack.com
Price includes dismount of old, disposal, remount, install, etc. at a shop that you pick in your area. Presumes shops in your area have an affiliation setup.

I'm with Brian; I'm all about "online", but not for tires. To me it's worth the few extra bucks to just drive in, have the new tires all mounted up and balanced, probably get an alignment, and get free tire rotation, free winter changeover, and free flat repair (Town Fair Tire in Connecticut). Plus I like to support local businesses when I can.
I can see the value of the local/online combo, but there wasn't a TireBuyer dealer within 100 miles of me.
