Default Need Help-I.D. this loose part in my trans pan

Hi all,

My trans (46RE) is getting some needed maintenance...solenoids, sensors, filter and band adjustment. I found this part laying in my pan and would like to return it where it belongs before I finish up. What is it and where does it go?

Band anchor.

Have you noticed any slippage in any gear(s)?

Yes stewie01, slippage and kicks down to neutral at highway speeds when floored.

Thanks moe7404. Appreciate the info.

I'll get back into it tonight and post results.

Thanks guys!

You'll have to drop the valve body to put it back. Check the strut at the other end of the band. Chances are it's out of place as well.

Arde, you seem to be the front anchor band guy! Thanks for your help with mine. Snowfan, After you drop the valve body down, carefully swing it down and to the right (passenger side) and you'll be able to see the end of the front band without disengaging the parking pawl. You'll probably have to move the "fingers" for the NSS out of neutral in order to get it to swing away enough to get in there. Don't forget to move the switch fingers back to neutral before you put the NSS back into the case. Lube the seals for the linkage and the solenoid with petroleum jelly before you put the valve body back in place.

Use a telescoping magnet to put the anchor band in place, then reach around with your left hand and tighten the front band adjust screw finger tight. Put the valve body back and adjust your bands to spec. Put everything back together, and you will be a happy guy - my tranny shifts better than it did when I bought the truck!

If you don't have them, the service and parts manuals are in the DYI section.

In the photos, you can see the end of the front band - it's kind of a brass color.

You guys have been incredibly helpful, thank you so much. I did not get a chance to work on it last night but did study the service manual. Ought to have it back together by tomorrow after work.

Thanks again. I'll let you know how it works when I'm done.

Couple of problems...it looks like I am all out of band material. Not much room on front or rear adjustment screw. I guess that explains why the anchor fell out.

And...this fell out and according to the book it ought to have another spring...

Look for the spring or look for a trans?

Some had the spring on top, others did not. I think it was fairly random. if you didn't find it in bits and pieces, chances are really good it was never there.

WITTRANS.COM offers 'slip in' bands that do not require disassembly of the trans to install. If all else seems good, it's a viable option.

That's good news on the spring...I think.

It was shifting pretty good, totally drivable. The lack of band material surprised me. The forward drum has some pretty deep grooves in it...

I'll call WITTRANS and talk to them about those slip in bands. Thanks for the link.
