Default 98 Ram passenger side mirror-HELP!

Howdy!

The glass on my power/heated passenger side mirror broke. I ordered what was supposed to be a replacement from RockAuto, but it didn't fit. The back was different. I went to my local Dodge dealer and his replacement was just like the one from RockAuto.

There are some numbers on the back of mine:

RH 1 83-10700-000 as well as the Dodge Pentastar. There is also a circle with the numbers 1-12 around the outside edge with 99 in the center and a bar between the 9's with one end pointing to 4 and the other 10 on the edge.

Finally there are the letters PPO inside a square. I'm attaching a pic of this.

I really don't want to replace the entire mirror because the glass is broken so any help in finding the correct glass sure would be appreciated. I'm attaching a pic showing the back.

Did you give the dealer the # on it or just make & model? Dealer can usually bring up parts breakdowns to look at to match the part.

The parts guy at the Dodge dealer used my VIN number to determine the part number. He said, "I got one in stock"...but as mentioned, it was different than my OEM mirror as described above.

The parts guy is paid to know, and or work it out.

98's are a tricky year... there's 98 and 98½ yr models.
98 is built before the end of May 98, and 98½ is Jun 98 and on.
If your build date is close to the change, it could conceivably have a part that is not theoretically for that VIN.

He needs to identify your old part, independent from what it was fitted to.

I have another thought. Has anyone replaced just the mirror glass? I see that I can get one on Ebay and Amazon. It requires that you remove the broken glass from the backing plate and then use what looks like a 3M adhesive pad to attach the new glass. Doing this, though, would disallow the heating feature, I guess it could melt the adhesive.

What do y'all think?

I think, in the end, it might just be easier/cheaper/more effective to replace the entire mirror.

You are probably right, but I'm not sure I have the skill to remove the inner door panel to get at the mounting hardware. There's all the wiring in it for the door speaker, the power locks, and the power window. I was hoping to keep this simple.

As was mentioned above, the 98 models are transitional. Does anyone know if the 1999's use the mirror like I show above?

Just need to have the right tool to pull the door panel. Mirror is only one connector, and it should be right there in the door, where it is relatively easy to get to. I don't *think* the connector pinout changed..... so it *should* just be plug and play.

Anyone know where I can get a "door panel" tool? Is it just as easy as "Hey You" says??

Thanks!
