Hello, i purchased a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab short bed 5.9l Magnum, nv4500 5speed manual transmission and 4x4 has 4.10s. I managed to blow out the rear for a second time and i got lucky and my buddy had the rear i needed so we just swapped it over, but ive been trying to find a set of spiders to replaced the grenaded ones. I was under the assumption that it was a dana 70 rear but im having no luck finding anything for it. The sticker in the glove box says Front axle #5200, Rear Axle #6200, Axle Differential Limited-slip, and if it is a dana 70 im not sure if its a 70, 70HD, or a 70U. Any help finding the parts or finding out what axle it is is much appreciated

 

Yours should be a D60.

 

Edit: I looked around and it is infact a D60, the rear i pulled out of a 2500 was a 9.25 rear. My only question is with the 4.10 ratio and 35" tires what would be be better to get to avoid further issues, i was looking at a just getting yukon spiders for it but i would rather have a locker but i dont want to put a 400-500 dollar locker in it and blow it because of wheel hop again.

 

What year was the donor rear out of? For a couple model years, dodge offered the 'light duty' 3/4 ton, that just had beefed up 1500 axles in it......

How did you manage to blow up a D60??

I would be tempted to go with 4.56 gears, and a detroit true trac.

 

im pretty sure it was 98-99. i could be wrong tho, it had the 98-02 dash. there where some differences from it to mine so im thinking it was a 98. The rear i actually put in the truck the first time was out of a 99 2500 that one was identical to mine and the Wheel Hop grenaded it twice now, i wanted to swap the ratio in it but i didnt know what would be best with the 35" tires. I was gonna leave it 4.10 and put 33's on it. If i swap it to a 4.56 is that gonna kill my gas mileage and the little bit of speed i have?

 

Drive so you don't get wheel hop? Not that hard......

Going to 4.56 gears and 35's may actually HELP your gas mileage, and acceleration. Of course, the engine will be turning a bit higher RPM for any given speed than previously.... but, it won't have to work as hard to get it there.

If wheel hop is blowing up spider gears and such, you are definitely doing something wrong....... or, got a marginal rear in the first place..... I have almost 200,000 miles on mine, and the only thing I have had to do to it, is the pinion seal.....

If you continue to abuse it, you can look forward to having to replace it again. That's just how it works.

 

As for the wheel hop i know what the issue is and don't need clarification on it, i got that when it grenaded.

I've been tossing the idea of switching out the gears around since i purchased it..... The truck it self has roughly 3.5-4 lift on it with 35's. Lifting coils in the front and blocks in the rear. It rides rough as hell, I wanted to put the stock 2500 springs in the front with 2-3 leveling spacers, with the same size block in the rear with 33's instead of 35's...... I wanted to originally swap 3.54 gears, then thought about 3.73's. But then i thought about leaving it 4.10 and just putting 33's under it....Its a thought, i've never messed with this before my first ram 1500 was stock everything and was a 318 5 speed with 3.55 gears so it was a blast

 

My truck is still stock ride height, all stock suspension, with 265/75/16 tires, and it rides rough when not loaded too. That's gonna be standard for a 3/4 ton truck..... Those springs are indeed stiff. Put a thousand pounds of dirt in the bed though, and it rides like a cadillac. (fuel economy suffers though.......)
