Default 2000 v10 temp gauge reading low check engine light on

.
I hate computer cars.

My engine temp runs around 185s but my temp gauge says around 140.

My check engine light is on and the code says the sender or gauge is reading incorrectly or the sender or sender wires are not grounded.

WTF is this all about? The gauge works so the wires must be ok.

I removed the original sender and installed a new one from standard motor products and it does the exact same thing.

I want my gauge to read correctly and the check engine light to go off.

Anyone have any ideas?

What code are you getting? how did you determine the engine is running at around 185?

You can try a 'cluster test'. Simply turn the ignition on, while holding down the trip reset button. Let go of the button, and the cluster should go thru its self test. (and also present any cluster related codes.)

I have an infra red temp gun.

What things does this test tell you?

The test will make all the lights come on, and make the gauges sweep their full range. Since you only care about the temp gauge, just make sure it gets its full travel, and doesn't stick anywhere. It will likely display codes in the Odometer display, but, you can pretty much ignore them.

Just turn the ignition off, and the cluster will function like it usually does. (including any errors......)

If the gauge will run its full sweep, then the cluster likely isn't the problem. It's possible that the sending unit is bad, has a bad connection, or something along those lines. If the sensor isn't telling the PCM the truth, the PCM tends to get confused, and will whine about it. (generally its the code for 'engine too cold, too long', which a fair few folks see if they install a cooler thermostat than what the PCM thinks is in there.) That's why I wanted to know what the code was.

Your problem may be as simple as a failed, or wrong, thermostat.

it has a new t stat . i got a new sender they both ohm out the same . it is not the sender or the wires . if the wires were bad the gauge would not read.

What temp does the PCM see? Is it different than what the gauge is reading??

Most parts stores should have a reader that will do some data......
