Default Oil Question 20w50 or 30w

Hi,
I have a 1988 dodge 1 ton ram van on propane.
she burns quite a bit of oil and i use it everynight for about 2 hours for a courier run carrying newspapers.
I have been told to use and have been using 20w50. would putting heavier oil in it reduce the oil consumption???

Slightly but not much. Once 20W-50 is heated up, it flows about as fluidly as 10W-30.

the above is not correct
20w-50 flows as 50w hot and 20w cold
10w-30 flows as 30w hot and 10w cold

Maybe new in the bottle at room temperature. But in the real non-laboratory world, onceboth areheated up to engine temperature, you will not be able to tell the difference between the two. I've used both, and yes 20W-50 pours in slower than 10W-30 but it drains out just as fast.

Did you use a viscosity cup To measure it?
If you didn't your observation is worthless.

If it's viscosityneeds to be measured to tell any difference, then that only goes to back up my remark of there not being much of a difference between the two.

There is not much differance between .005 and .010 clearance either but one the motor stays together the other it comes apart.

You obvousely don't have a clue as to how oils are rated.

So quit trying to give bad advise on a subject you know nothing about.

After 30 years of vehicle repair, renovations, repair manualsand text books, I know very well how and why oils are rated the way they are. I also know what is what in the real world. A motor that burns "quite a bit" of oil a day is not going to see any benefit if the oil is switched over to 30W from 20W-50 like the original poster asked. That's all he wanted to know and all you've gone and done is confuse the issue with your rhetoric.

The only thing you said that was correct is"slightly but not much" the rest was worthless.

PS I was building a racing Offys before you were born.

Take a read at this website and do some self education on oil viscosity. Thick oil is bad, I run 5-30 Castrol and would run German Castrol 0-30 if I could get my hands on it.
