Pick up a Mopar fuel pump, or rebuild the current assembly with a quality pump; quit buying the cheap pumps.
And you're SURE it's the pumps failing?
(It could be, I went through eight in 150,000 miles on my Malibu before I finally broke down and paid for a ACDelco pump. It was still running, after being put in at about 230,000 miles, when the motor overheated and died at about 323,000 miles.)

RockAuto lists the inline filter for 1995, but not for 1996, so I made the assumption that it was OBDII that changed it.
Thanks for the correction!

I have not had a 4 cyl Dakota but when I needed fuel pumps for the ones I have had I seem to remember that the 2 line pump fits those models all the way til 96 so maybe the 4 cyl ones still have the filter inline?
Once they went returnless they have a "filter'/regulator" on top of the fuel pump itself that, if you can find a listing for it among the parts stores, most want 90% of the cost of the whole pump assy just for that. It is the metal thing on to of the pump that your fuel line connects to on those systems.
I have bought them more reasonably from an outfit on FeeBay out of California. around $35. I also bought a complete, Carter branded fuel pump ***'y from them for my Durango for 1/2 of what I could get it locally, about 4 months ago.

I had a 96 dakota. The fuel pump went out , or at least i thought. After replacing the pump, it drove fine for a few days then it went out again. After being parked over night it started right up. Found out it was the pigtail to the pump. $10.00 later and a new pigtail it ran until the wheels feel off.
