Daily-driven Dodge Charger Hellcat Runs 9s: Track Time Tuesday

By -

Charger Hellcat is a true family hauler, driven in the rain and snow, running 9.80s with baby seats in the back.

The beauty of the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat is that it combines the functionality of a big sedan with the performance capabilities to beat up supercars. This week’s Track Time Tuesday video comes to us from the YouTube channel of Derek K and it features a B5 Blue Hellcat Charger that is a legitimate daily driver all year long, serving as a family sedan in the rain and snow while also covering the quarter-mile in the 9-second range.

Bos’ Hellcat Charger

The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat in the video above is owned by Brian Bos, who provided us with all of the key details of his supercharged super-sedan.

Under the hood, the 6.2-liter Hemi has been upgraded with a 2.5-inch upper pulley, a carbon fiber Legmaker cold air intake, ID1300 fuel injectors, twin fuel pumps, a Killer Chiller intercooler system and an E85 tune from the Hellcat-tuning expert Tim Barth.

We don’t know exactly how much power this Hellcat Charger is making, but we do know that this car does not have any weight removed, shy of the change to the 17-inch rear wheels, wrapped in Mickey Thompson ET Street R drag radials measuring 305-millimeters wide. In fact, this Charger has the added weight of two baby seats in the back, so while the race wheels might cut a little weight, the odds are good that this Dodge sedan weighs just as much as it did when stock.

Finally, in the winter, Bos mounts a set of Blizzak snow tires and drives the car in the worst winter conditions that the Chicago area has to offer. This is a true, year-round, family sedan that can stop by the track and run in the 9s. For those wondering, he does run the E85 year-round as well, having installed a block heater to make the car more user-friendly in the cold months.

In the video above, Brian Bos and his Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat are making a run at Great Lakes Dragway. After getting off of the line nicely, pulling a 1.498 60-foot time, this B5 beauty rockets past the eighth-mile marker in just 6.371 seconds with a speed of 111.91 miles per hour, stopping the quarter mile timer with a 9.869 at 141.64 miles per hour.

This run was made with the baby seats in the back, so in what is literally the exact same form as it is driven on the street on nice summer days, this Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat runs 9.80s. With a swap to the Blizzaks, this Charger cruises all winter long with monster power, so there is no questioning that this is a legitimate 9-second daily driver in all conditions.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
