2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8

Magnum SRT-8 is unquestionably the coolest of the modern American wagons, packing 425 horsepower.

Among modern Mopar models that no longer exist, the Dodge Magnum is probably the most popular. It is common to see comments in the forum or on social media sites calling for the return of the muscular sport wagon. Offered from 2004 through 2008, the Magnum was the coolest American wagon offered in decades, including the option of two different Hemi engines. The premium engine option was the 6.1-liter V8, packing 425 horsepower in the SRT-8 model for 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Sadly, the Magnum was discontinued after the 2008 model year due to lackluster sales numbers. Less than 4,000 SRT-8 models were made, placing them among the rarest of the modern Mopar performance models.

Many people hope to see the Magnum make a comeback, but for those who want a like-new Dodge sport wagon from 2006, you are in luck. The Hemi-powered hauler shown here will be auctioned off at the Mecum Kissimmee auction in January and with just 2,169 miles on the odometer, it is practically new.

Magnum SRT-8

The heart of the 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8 is the 6.1-liter Hemi, which produces 425 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. That power is sent towards the rear wheels by means of a 5-speed automatic while unique 20-inch SRT-branded wheels wrapped in factory-correct Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires put the power to the ground. The SRT-8 package also includes Brembo brakes and a sport-tuned suspension, so while the 425-horsepower Magnum shined brightest on the drag strip, they hold their own on a curvy track as well.

In addition to the performance components, the 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8 features a unique look. This includes a front and rear fascia, with dual exhaust poking from under the rear end. Of course, there is SRT-8 badging out back, along with Hemi badges on the fenders.

Inside, this Magnum SRT-8 features deep-bolstered seats with suede centers and leather outer portions. Red stitching trims the seats and SRT-8 logos are embroidered into the headrests.

In stock form, the Magnum SRT-8 can sprint from a stop to 60 miles-per-hour in just 5.1 seconds while a standing quarter mile takes 13.1 seconds. No modern American wagon has offered performance like that, but the general disinterest in “station wagons” led to relatively poor sales. Those slower-than-expected sales led the demise of the Magnum after the 2008 model year.

2006 with 2,169 miles

The 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8 being auctioned off at the Mecum Kissimmee auction next month is painted Inferno Red Crystal Pearlcoat and it features a factory sunroof. This Magnum has been owned by the same person since new, having been stored in a climate-controlled facility. Based on the fact that the odometer is only reading 2,169 miles, it probably spent most of its life in that storage facility.

As you might expect from a 2006 Magnum with 2,169 miles, it is in pristine condition inside and out. Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires were one of the factory options, but we do not know if these are actually the original tires. If they are, at nearly 15 years old, anyone who is going to drive and enjoy this SRT-8 will want to get new rubber first.

This Magnum SRT-8, which is one of just 2,970 built for 2006, comes with the original window sticker and sales brochures. It will roll across the Mecum Kissimmee auction block on Friday, January 15, 2021. If you have always dreamed of owning a new Magnum SRT-8, the car being sold in Florida next month is likely the closest you will get at this point.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
