Modern ‘General Lee’ Looks Fabulous as a Hellcat

General Lee Hellcat

General Lee was built to outrun the fuzz, and this Hellcat Challenger Widebody is a ‘2.0’ take on that same inspiration.

If you were to get yourself involved in some hooliganism like burnouts and donuts and some throttle-induced fun, then you’d want a quick car. And if you’re taking inspiration from moonshine runners and NASCAR racers that spawned Dukes of Hazzard, then your car might be a Mopar. With a big V8 and two doors.

As we saw on Autoevolution, a modernized take on this raucous machine has taken the shape of a Challenger Hellcat Widebody. Built by TAG Motorsports, this conversation starter takes inspiration from the General Lee Charger from Dukes of Hazard, which takes inspiration from the Chevy stock car from The Moonrunners… Which itself takes its name “Traveller” after the war general’s horse.

This modern example has more horsepower than all predecessors combined, even if it’s not a Redeye. But like it’s predecessor, it wears bright orange paint, and a big “01” on the door. As the more modern example, it even has splitter extensions, hood pins, and NT555 drag radials. And doors that open. It’s here to deliver on the promise of speed and out a good ol’ hurtin’ on the competition.

Even if this one can fly down the drag strip, we doubt it’ll be getting air over any jumps. And, the strip isn’t where the old General Lee lived out its motorsport duties. In fact, it spent just as much time in the air as it did off-road. We can’t envision this car doing any of that. But that’s not the only change from the General Lee that came before it.

You’ve probably noticed the elephant in the room by now. On TAG Motorsport’s Instagram, it has already created quite a stir. As you know, there was one thing about the original General Lee that, to the chagrin of Dukes of Hazard enthusiasts, is a bit polarizing. In the best way possible, a suitable replacement fixes that issue. As there’s no more appropriate place to put an American flag than on a thundering orange V8 that we all can love.
