Tranny that fixed itself
My 5 speed started slipping out of 5th gear whenever I was going up hill or reached speeds about 65 or so. I didn't do anything to the car, drove it to work and around town. We took the wifes Mustang whenever we went on trips. But for the last few months I have used my Avenger on the highway and it has not slipped out of gear? I have a feeling it could slip out of gea in the future but I wonder what cold have caused that? Nearly 20 years ago I had a car that wouldn't go into gear and after sitting for a week it was fine and never had a problem again. Strange!
There is something similar that the 4g63 tranny'sgo through. 5th gear moves around and can pop out of gear. Let me look for it as I'm sure what's happening to your tranny is the same...even though they are different trannys, the internals are different but the way they are made are similar...anyway, let me find it and get back with you Scat.
Well, I found it fast, lol.
Here you go.

If it's not that, the rail for the fork could be bad, 5th gear could be worn somehow (don't know how, it's 5th gear, lol), etc. How old is the fluid by chance?

I had the fluid topped off recently and it took about 3/4 of a quart. I have wondered if dirt or debris may have been in the fluid causing it to slip out [it used to actually pop out of gear kinda hard] I can't get it to do it anymore. So should I still replace the tranny or just drive it like it is. The car has 224,000 miles on it and this tranny has nearly half of that.

It could have been acting up since the fluid was low. How many quarts does your tranny take? If it hasn't done it since topping off....hmmm, I'll suggest removing the old fluid and just plain replacing it. That way you can see how the old fluid looks (even though it would be mixed with some new fluid) and to see if there are any shavings in it. When was the last time the fluid was changed? That fluid is very important. It serves to lubricate the moving parts and to transfer heat. If it is no longer capable of doing one or the other or both, the moving parts won't like it, lol.
Here's my thinking on rebuilding/swapping out the tranny. If you drive it till it breaks or if you change it out now, you will still pay to have a newer tranny installed or rebuilt. The only difference between waiting until it breaks or just replacing it now is that one will leave you stranded on the side of the road and the other will have you back on the road sooner than later.
I would like to have an old tranny, rebuilt and sitting aside until it's time to change it, whether it be from breaking on me or just being tired of it acting up on me. That's assuming I sense something fishy. That's just me though.
If you feel like the tranny can go on, let it go until it does it again and/or you're just tired of it acting up. I would start saving up for one or for a rebuild though.
