For starters I've got a 1996 ES 2.5L V6
I was driving on the expressway when suddenly the car started surging and the check engine light came on and the car died on me. After being towed off the Eway and waiting for an hour I was able to drive it home which was maybe a mile away. They put the OBD scanner on it and it read P1391 and AutoZone gave me a print out for the camshaft sensor. Which brings me to my questions

I was wondering if the camshaft position sensor is independent in my car or would I have to replace the whole distributor?
Could this be an overheating fuel pump?
Could this affect the timing/ would I need to have the timing belt done again if it stretched or jumped?

 

The CPS is a hall effect sensor and YES it can fail with no warning ...
It is a seperate part , that is reletively cheap and easily replaced ...
NO it has nothing to do with an overheating fuel pump ...
NO it will not effect/damage/change timing

 

Could you briefly describe where it is, because I was told that only the I4 DOHC have an independent sensor and that's why I couldn't buy one and I would need the entire distributor because it is incorporated into the distributor for the V6's

I believe that this is how you test the crankshaft sensor, because I see nothing near the top of the trans that looks like what I purchased from AutoZone, Is the end opposite the socket on the cam sensor housed in the engine?

Where exactly is the sensor located in relation to the distributor cap?

 

crank sensor is mounted on the tranmsission in an area just below the distributor

cam sensor is mounted near the battery tray

Your Title says Camshaft sensor , the part you have is the Crankshaft sensor So I'm a little confused as to WHAT you want to replace

 

I DO want to replace the Camshaft Sensor NOT the Crankshaft sensor, the piece they sold me looks just like the one in the link, that's probably the mix up because I was under the impression that that was the Camshaft sensor, could you point me to a picture of the camshaft sensor?

 

They LOOK the same , Unsure if they are interchangeable , The link States its a Crank sensor :
