I finally got the cat. gutted and the exhaust put back together with the help of my neighbor (this project has been one of the biggest pains in the ***). And I have to say that for all the trouble that we went through to get this project done, so far it has not been worth it. There has been no noticable power difference and my gas mileage sucked this last tank. It is possible that I got some very poor quality gas so this tank should determine if the juice was worth the squeeze.

I had my shop do it for me when my Dakota started to hesitate and bog during acceleration. They just cut it open with a torch, emptied it and welded it back together. If anything, my truck "feels" alittle slower and has less low end torque. I'm assuming that there's too little back pressure and any HP gains will be seen in the mid to upper range. Too bad I don't normally drive in that range and really miss the ooomph ! Mind you, my Dakota already had a custom 3" exhaust and 3.90 gears. It was LOUD before and now it's just LOUD and "tinny" sounding. LOL I wouldn't bother with it because the benefits are not worth the effort (or summons). Just my two cents.

Gutting or removing a cat will make the vehicle perform worse than an functioning cat as you are now finding out.Your vehicle needs a certain amount of backpressure to operate at it's best. You need a higher volume of exhaust gas going through your exhaust.By just making it bigger essentially by opening the cat actually slows the flow of exhaust by having less of a vacuum.Think of plumbing..the smaller the pipe, the higher the pressure of water will be coming trough it.If you increase the size of the pipe, with the same water pressure coming into it,you will lose flow pressure.Understand?

Sure, your vehicle will run better than a vehicle with a clogged cat,but not better than a properly functioning cat.My suggestion would be to have a High Flow Cat installed and you will see the performance and gas mileage back.

Good luck man.

those cats are good for the environment and great for cars but i seriously don't think there made to go off-road.
i had a 90 comanchee that lost power after two years. under warranty the dealer said the cat was shattered to pieces inside but there was not a mark on the outside case. two years later the same thing. i got it cut out and a piece of pipe put in.
i go off-road fishin in some bad places, i don't think the ceramic inside can handle the bad vibrations.

I cut off the cat on my Ram to find that the insides were shattered to pieces, and most of those pieces got blown into the muffler and clogged it up , after i cut it off it ran great again

Licensed Plumber here, you are dead wrong - pipe size has nothing to do with pressure. You will have the same pressure in a 3/8" pipe as you would in a 1 1/2" pipe. The increase comes in volume, you simply restrict the opening, restricting the the volume and creating a spray effect...

Pressure is created from either a pump or gravity, it can not be increased by reducing tubing size.

I cut the cat out and added a glasspack to it. Then I cut my old muffler and went to a napap store and they gave me a free muffler, totallywrong size but I am not complaining.

Just FYI the last post was in 2008. And while im posting, if cats gave you more power then everybody at the drag strip would be running cats and not (open headers=zero back pressure).
