318 air exhuast pump
i have a whining comeing out of the exhaust pump on my dakota i would like to bypass does anybody know of a way to do this i saw that the tensioner is to close for a shorter belt it is a 1991 le 318 4x4 with ac and pwr steer
air pump, smog pump.... its a emissions thing that pumps air into the cat and header i believe. Its junk, eats up power and just makes alot of noise from moving air.
Ive wanted to get rid of mine for some time now....so ill be keeping a real close eye on this thread

That must be a California thing! My truck doesn't have one and I've never heard of it before.
I'd say download the Factory Service Manuals available on this site and see if theres another belt set-up (maybe even from another year truck) that would allow you to get rid of the pump.

im not sure what other components are required on california cars over the other 49, but if you have the money, you could drop the pump, and in the event of a computer problem, you could buy a used computer from somebody out of state.
its not a cali thing....my truck has it and im in canada... truck was made in US and then lived its whole life in canada.... i think it might have been a 91- older thing.....

Well maybe if you can find a '92+ serpentine set-up in a junkyard (basically all the mounting brackets for the different pumps, alt, etc), that would be an easy route to take. I'm not sure, I'm just spitting out ideas... maybe someone with a '91 and older dakota can give you better advise.
Ya air pumps are pre multiport injection. Back with carbs and TB injectors. Mostly 70's 80's cars trucks all makes can have it. All over the US. It dilutes the exhaust gasses. So you put fresh air with dirty exhaust gasses and instantly it is "cleaner" (According to the manufacturer's). It is not needed unless you have to pass emission tests in your city or state.
ya im in florida and its for pre mpi systems i just dont need the damn thing because all it does is make noise since i cut my pipes and put a cherrybomb on stupid emmision crap half the stuff doesnt even do what its supossed to
