I have mine wired with a relay on a toggle switch. i wired my buddys chev with a relay and a switched pos signal(ie turn the key on and it will trip the relay so he doesnt have to remember to flip a switch). i think the best way would be to get a temp sensor that would trip a relay at a preset temp

+1. I prefer this way to a thermo switch so that if I take the truck offroad to play, or if its a really hot day, I can leave the fan running all the time and never worry about it overheating. Also, I've gone entire short trips across town never turning the fan on, which saves putting a load on the alternator.

I've seen it done with a 3 way switch and a thermostat, you you can set it to use the thermostat, full time on or totally off. That's how I would do it.

I would go thermal switch if it were me and I had a dual fan unit.

I have two fans and a sheet of aluminum I am going to weld up into a shroud. One fan will be run with a thermal switch and one with a switch in the dash.

I agree, id probably go with that once i get a 318 so i can go with it off if its not hot out or if i want it to warm up fast, on a thermo mabey for highway and more and manual switch for hot days or whenever i want it to run cool

hmm how necessary is said shroud? I was thinking of just using a generic fan from summit similar to the direct fit one, but the install just comes with ziptie like connectors. Can I just use those, or will it not be efficient enough w/o the shroud?

I think the shroud is not necessary. But if towing or hauling you want your radiator to cool 100% of its body. Not 70% or so with out the shroud. What I did was take off my radiator and mounted the fans. Then got some simple sheet metal and make the corners.
