If you're hearing crunching noises and its not staying in position, it sounds to me like its time to take it out of the truck and open it up!
But just to rule out the linkage adjustment as a possibility, loosen the linkage, put the transfer case in 4Hi, put the shift lever in the 4Hi position, and tighten the linkage. Should only take about 5 minutes to adjust. You'll need a 9/16 wrench to turn the transfer case shifter.

ah it was junk..got a different one...being run dry it looked like someone had taken a handful or rocks and dumped them in there and then drove it around for a month. Hell after one week the fluid that I did put in there looked like liquid anti-seize, all gray and full of silver shavings...
