I use 10w40 in the summer and 10w30 in the winter. And since you're from SoCal you know about all the stop and go BS. I've always used regular oil. And I did add a trans cooler for the high heat summers we have.

I don't really see a reason to use a thicker oil cause it has high mileage. Either way with w30 or w40. You'll still get an oil bearing.
