You know shadow... I just reread through this thread and was somehow able to pull something out of the back of my memory... seeing as though I did this swap over a year ago now...

Now that you mention the cps connector for the auto and manual are backward, I vaguely remebered having to modify my connector as well. So I went out and looked and took a picture. I cut off the little tab on the male side of the connector (truck side, not sensor side) to make them fit together. No cutting and soldering wires... 30 second fix.

hmmm, i would have never thought about that but yeah i'll have to do that and get a new sensor just to have the straight(non cut) wiring(although i'm rewiring the engine on my truck).

oh and i talked to guy at the auto store today(i've been seening this guy around the parts department at multiple dealerships, ect...) i asked him about it and he said that it sounds like the map sensor went bad. so i'm going to try a new one this weekend or whenever payday comes around again.

also i picked up a new cap and rotor today and the rotor came with a black tip on it, who knew?!

I was just kidding about the oil change lol no idea why i thought that was funny probably cuz i feel like i'm doing them constantly. I still have to do one on my 1990 dak i'm hoping to have ready next week. When I have more money I guess i'll hunt down another dak. I was just thinking how sweet it would be to have one of every gen.

Btw are you talking about the rotor that goes under the dist. cap?

so i picked up a new map sensor and i had the day off so i finished the wiring, threw on the new map sensor, turned the key, and...nothing. so i grounded the p/n switch(i forgot to do), turned the key and the motor cranked but wouldn't fire. turns out i connected the wrong connector to the distributor. but now i got that fixed it runs with minor shake and no backfire...

now my question is, my check engine light was on. it threw a code 22 which, if i remember correctly is the engine coolant temp sensor. i ran back threw all the wiring to see if it was a loose connection, but it turned out that i never cut the wire. so i pulled out my oh-so-sacred haynes manual, looked at the wiring schematics and it shows a 2 wire coolant temp sensor...i have a 1 wire temp sensor, and the wire colors it shows for the sensor are the same color as the connector i cut out that didn't go anywhere.

...so, is there a 2 wire coolant temp sensor some where that i don't know about(can't find) the only 2 temp sensors i found on my motor were the one on the intake near the front of the motor and the one by the thermostat? or is it just saying that the 1 wire sensor went bad?

probably 2 sensors, one feeds the computer, one feeds the dash gauge, IIRC...

Well dang bill55az, for someone with so many dakotas and so much liturature on them, you should know this one!

There are only 2 sensors. The 1 wire ECT sensor is for the gauge, the 2 wire ECT sensor is for the computer.

but the problem is the computer is throwing the code for the coolant temp sensor and when i went back over the wiring for it, it was never disconnected. i looked over the wiring diagram i have and it doesn't show any 1 wire coolant temp sensor(which is a purple/yellow wire i believe) it only shows the 2 wire sensor(tan/black and black/light blue) although when i redid the wiring i cut out the 2 wire sensor connector thinking it didn't go anywhere. i can't plug in the 2 wire sensor connector because the coolant temp sensor has one terminal blocked off. do i need this other 2 wire connector?

My 95 manual is in AZ, I am in Utah. Got the 88 and 87 manuals, tho....
and last time I worked on the 95 was some time ago, so give me a break....Wait til you are 64, see what you remember.

Just for reference, I have parkinson's disease and a substantial percentage of PD patients also develop dementia. So not only do I have to type slower and correct errors more, I will probably end up thinking slower some day.

Reminds me of the old bumper sticker, I MAY BE SLOW, BUT I AM AHEAD OF YOU....

LOL!!!!!

Sorry... couldn't resist.

Yes, you absolutely need that 2 wire sensor... much more vitally than you need the 1 wire sensor. I think you just found your running issue!!
