Is it idling better at all?

You should reset the computer and drive it down the highway for 20 minutes to give the computer a chance to learn! My truck always runs better if I do that after making a major modification.

it has a backfire when it starts up idle is ok, but it tried to taker it to a gas station by my house cuz its getting low on gas. i got about a tenth of a mile down the road and she started backfiring like crazy. but it was only up in the higher rpms(anything above 2k) that it did it. i would have taken it down the freeway but i have to bend my shifter again so i'm not hitting my dash when i put it in first, third or fifth(it goes in those gears but i almost have to smash the shifter into the dash to get it)

For the backfiring you may need to adjust the distributer if off. Or check your plug wires for the correct order on the distributer.

if i finally am able to get up around 6 am i'll double and triple check everything. now if only i had a timing light. the only problem with that is the closest timing light i have available is about and 1hr 30min away and i don't want to spend 40$ on a new one...
but i definitely wont be around this weekend to do any work on it, i'm going to the Jefferson car show and swap meet in jefferson cty,WI. from what i hear its pretty big.

You can check the timing with a light, but I believe all daks after 92 have fixed timing...non-adjustable.

Yes it is computer controlled non-adjustable. But the distributer is adjustable. If not in the correct location the computer can't adjust it beyond a point.

Actually, tmacdakota is right. Straight out of the FSM...

Base ignition timing and all timing advance is controlled
by the powertrain control module (PCM). Because
ignition timing is controlled by the PCM,
base ignition timing is not adjustable on any of these
engines.

Yes Timing is not adjustable, I'm not talking about the timing. But the distributer is adjustable.

It must be lined up correctly. See pic Straight out of the FSM. The computer can't adjust the timing enough to compensate for a miss-adjusted distributer, which can cause misfire, backfiring, pre-detestation.

(4) Position distributor into engine to its original
position. Engage tongue of distributor shaft with slot
in distributor oil pump drive gear. Position rotor to

the number one spark plug cable position.
Even then it is not correctly positioned. To get it perfect and to have the Fuel Sync set you have to use a scanner.
