Default 1991 std cab rear end on a 1996 ext cab possible?

Hi forum!

Just like the title says. I found a 91 rear end on the craigz list for around 250. I emailed the seller w a few basic questions. I kinda want to look at the truck and see if there is anything on it worth pulling. I'm just wondering if i could even put that rear on my truck being that mine is a 96 ext cab and the doner truck is a 91 std cab.

Just something i was pondering. Wanted to get some feedback on it. Thx!

Yes you can. It should be a direct bolt on. But why are you looking for an axle? Is yours bad?

The only thing you will want to check is if the axle is a Chry 7.25 or a Chry 8.25. You should have the 8.25 in your truck with a V8. You can tell the difference by the diff cover. If it is Oval in shape than it is a 8.25, if it is Octagon shape than it is a 7.25.

Also it looks like you have a 2wd, which the gear ratio doesn't matter as much. But if it is a different gear ratio then you have, your speedo will be off as well as performance and MPG may get better or worse. So check the gear ratio.

Also some axles came with 9in or 10in drum brakes. The bigger the better. With your V8 you should have 10in. If the other is 9in you will lose some braking power.

And to add one thing to what Crazy said, make sure it has a rear ABS sensor hookup! I don't remember the year rear ABS came into play, but if it doesn't have one, you will lose your ABS.

Default thx

Thanks for all the info.

I am looking at replacing the current one because its making noise. I was toying with the idea of putting a LSD in it but those are like 400-600. If this axle i was looking at is low miles it may be worth picking up and putting on. Just toying with ideas.

You can check your diff gear ratio and the donor truck, too, by crawling under the rear and looking for a square metal tag/plate bolted to one of the diff cover bolts. My 93 LE is a 3.73 but it's 4WD...don't know what they put in 2WD's. Might also want to pull the wheels on the donor and check the back brakes, wheel cylinders, etc...just for grins. And dip your finger in the filler hole on the diff to make sure it has some juice...if it was run low or dry, it could be a howler like the one on your truck...hope not, sounds like a good price if it checks out.

Howdy Howdy,

I got a reply back from that person w the axle. It has 155k on it and the person indicates it didn't make any noise when they drove around. It sounds like the truck was a salvage or abandon vehicle because its coming from a towing company.

I may go take a look at it and see what the story is.

Thx

If you happen to decide to buy it, try to beat him down on the price! I can go over to my local pull-it-yourself junkyard and buy a Dakota or Durango axle for $130 out the door. And thats flat rate any axle... rather it be a 8.25 inch open or 9.25 inch posi. Anyway, $250 is just too expensive.

Yo,

Yea i agree that its too much, especially with those miles on it. The way I see it, I'm not desperate and i know its been on the list for at LEAST a month. I'd be doing him a favor by taking it :-P

I may take a look at it and see what i think. I'll let everyone know what happens :-D
