Default Transmission, What will work?

I have a 1993 Dakota, 318 4x4 and it needs a transmission. There is a yard here that sells any trans for 91 dollars but dont know if they work (thats why there cheap) and im wondering what i can pull it from (ie ram, dakota?) i would prefer the newest i can get without causing problems. thanks!!

You have a 42rh, and could pull one from a dakota, van or ram that has a v6, up to '95, any of those should have a 42rh. Iirc, '96 and newer will have a 42re (re is electronicly controlled). I am not sure how far back you can go to get one out. But look for a 42rh. You can use one from one of the V8s, but it is a more complicated and not a direct swap.

I am pretty sure he needs to use a 46RH if it is auto. And actually I think that the 46RH is what was behind the 5.2L in 1993 anyways. My brother has a 5.2L '93 and it has the 46RH.

The 42RH is only for the V6, which he doesn't have.

If it is a manual he needs a NV3500.

Dude, it is late, and I got that totally backwards. the whole time I am thinking V6, you are right, he needs a 46rh, should be easy to find. That is if you need an auto.

Actually re-reading this, the 42RH and 46RH are identical externally, you can't tell them apart, so you will need to check the numbers on the cases. I had a hard time trying to figure out how to decode those numbers. Maybe somone here knows how to read the codes off of the transmissions, I cannot find the link anymore.

o know all about the nv3500 swap, id love to but tey are rare around here. I rebuild mine and messed up the OD hub by putting one too many clutches in it and just wana get a used one. it is a 46rh but i wana know if i can pull one from a ram and what year. would a 01 durango one work or does it have more computer controlled parts? im sure the bell housings and the t-case bold patterns are the same.

You can pull a 46rh from a Dakota or Ram. IIRC, the Ram vans only had the 42rh (but don't hold me to that!). You can't get one from a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a v8 because the starter is on the wrong side of the non-removable bellhousing, so that limits you to only the Ram or Dakota.

You need to find one 1995 or older. 1996 started OBDII and the rh transmissions became the re transmissions. The difference being the rh has a hydraulically controlled governor valve and the re has an electronically controlled governor valve. Your truck won't be able to run an re, so that limits you to OBDI (1995 or older).
