Default 4x4 trouble

I have a 94 dakota and when I bought the truck I was told the 4x4 worked but the front pass cv axle was junk (boots were shredded). I replaced it this weekend and I am still having the same problems. 4x4 works good but get a popping and banging on turn and when I accelerate hard. Also bangs real loud when I put it back to 2 wheel. Not to familliar with 4x4's so any help is apreciated. I am thinking maybe the hubs up front but want to be sure.

When it has this problem are you on the street? Never use 4wd on the streets! Even on dirt it is normal for 4wd to bin on turns.

It happens going 5 mph straight in the snow. I know this banging isnt normal ( I think lol) It causes the truck to jerk when it does it. Have not driven it on dry pavement.

Still sounds normal with 4wd on tight turns. Look under the truck. If needed lift it up by the control arms and spin the tires. See what binds when it is at full lock.

It did it today going 15 mph straight down the road. It just makes a constant banging sound around every 2 sec. Would this be a diff problem or a tranfer case. its almost like it it poping in and out of gear.

Does it only do it when in 4WD? If so, your problem is likely in the t-case, or the front diff.

Agree with Crazy on the binding hubs. Also how are the ball joints? On a tight 4 wheel turn they can pop and move which is a bind also. you trying to put it in 4 wheel while moving? Mine aint too happy about that. Try holding the shifter and see what you feel when its klunkin. If you feel the shifter moving toward 2 wheel drive pull over and select between 4 hi 4 lo with the truck shut off in neutral. Then try driving again. Also since you have snow try 4 low, if you have a clutch start on level ground use 3rd gear. If noises go away you eliminate transfer case as source.

Sure sounds like the transfer case to me. Mine also crapped out last week except it was doing it in 2wd, popping, slipping, engaging 4wd by itself, ect. Moving it in the driveway today and it won't go back into 2wd and pops out of low range. I needed an excuse to park it anyways so I can get a 2wd for daily use and turn this one into a trail rig.
