Default Whinning noise higher speeds

1992 dakota 4x4 5 speed, I seem to get a pretty good whinning noise going down the highway especially above 45mph, however if I let of the gas and coast this seems to go away, is there a common problem that causes this? Thoughts of mine could be throw out bearing on clutch, bearing on back on trans for driveshaft or possibly rearend pinnion bearing not real sure any thoughts on where to start would be much appreciated. I have searched but not found much on a similar problem

does it sound quiet in 4th gear and whine in every other gear?
if so it's your tranny input bearing

throwout bearing usually if you sit still with the engine and push the clutch in and out you'll hear the difference

it does it in both 4th and OD those being the only two gears i get above 50 mph in, does not do it while still so not throw out bearing then. Like i said i hit between 50 and 55mph and when i am on the gas it whines, but if i cruise around 45 or so it is perfectly quiet. Any more thougts?

wow....just doesn't make sense

i only suggested the 4th/5th gear thing just in case..cause i know i have that problem
but something that shows up at 55 but not 45 is just odd

i wish i had something constructive to add

your problem sounds similar to what I have in my car
When I idle, nothing. When I drive I get a whining sound but if I put in the clutch it goes away. Right now my diff. is at a shop getting rebuilt. I was told it was shot but I am not certain that it is the cause of the sound. Apparently the gears had too much play and were meshing bad which is believe to have caused the sound.
The car jumped a curb before I got it so it could be other things too. I will let you know if the sound goes away once I reinstall it

Ok im still not able to quite figure this thing out, little more info, If going down road at 60 it is whining pretty good, if i let of the gas the noise goes away, however if i push in clutch noise goes away but if i hit the gas with the clutch in noise comes back, I think I am completely lost on what to check so unless someone has any ideas i think I will take it into the shop and see if they can trouble shoot it.

Did you ever get this "whinning" issue solved. I am havin ghte same problem and cannot figure it out. My whinning starts as soon as I shift into 5th gear. As soon as I hit 75, the noise goes away.
