Default 89 dakota v8 project

Originally equipped with a 4 cylinder and 5 speed, going to a v8 and OD auto trans...
Pretty sure the computer from a v6 and auto trans will just drop in, but all I want it to do is operate the tranny OD and lockup. The engine will have a carburetor.
I have access to lots of junkyards for the extra wiring and stuff.
Has anybody done this?

I'm not to sure if it would work out so well, since the computer will think the engine is not running there for not operate OD or TCC. Unless you get it custom flashed. B&E can do it. Link in FAQ2.

You can do simple toggle switches to switch both on and off.

Looking at it as an efi engine that has a carb attached, you would lose the sensors on the throttle body....
but it appears that PATC has a fairlly cheap way to make the OD trans work on just engine vacuum and trans pressures...3 sensors and a switch....

I plan on doing this myself in an 88 with a 318 2barrel and keeping the a500. the local trans shop is pretty helpfull I will see if this is anything like a GM 700r4 where a toggle can be used for lockup, maybe it's not that simple but the computer is about shot in my truck so I can't rely on it. if it's to much trouble i'll get something else to put in it's place. Keep us posted on the progress

If you have cruise control, you can tap into one of the terminals there, the one that is hot only when CC is engaged, and using a relay you can have Lockup at the same time that CC is being used. Tapping the brake will kill CC, and LU all at the same time.
OD probably shouldn't be attached there, as tapping the brake just a tad will kill OD, and you usually don't want that.

i had a v6 auto (a500) and dropped a 360 in. all you need to do is wire your od and lock up to 2 toggle switches. there should be a 3 prong plug coming off the trans and going to the computer. i dont remember the colors but the middle is your power. the outer two are for od and lockup, you wire both switches to ground and when you flipped them it completes the circuit and engages. the power should be a keyed 12v. i hope that helps

When using switches, there needs to be a way to disable OD in case you forget to turn off the switch at low speeds. An RPM operated switch, or something like that.
My son had a dakota that failed in the "always on" mode, and it ruined the tranny. Luckily, it was under warranty..

I would like to see some pictures if you have them, and what did you use for motor mounts?
