Unhappy Oil Change Story

1990 3.9........So decided to change oil and filter, useing a strap tool to remove the filter the filter did not want to budge. after denting the filter it then started to leak, oil down my arm to my armpits. the more i tried it just got worse tearing up the filter and bending the tool. my last try was to get the tool as close to the base of the filter that i could but as you know not much space under there and stuff in the way. last try and i did get it but what a pain, was starting to panic, thinking now what!. probaly my fault since the engine was cold, usally i do it with a hot engine.
PS, yea, i was the one that put it on

LOL I've been there, I feel your pain. I always put my filter on to tight, although I know not to.

I personally hate strap tools for changing filters...I use a pair of oil filter pliers. like in the link below...it is probably the smartest tool purchase I have ever made...

lol, Either you don't change your oil enough or you tightened it with a tool. Glad you got it off. I've been in that situation before, and didn't have an oil wrench, ended up getting it off with a pipe wrench lol. That was on a car I had just bought though. I always hand tighten it, and don't have a problem. Never need a wrench that way.

I had a oil filter pliers and that caused my troubles. It collapsed the filter. Then I couldn't get a bite on it with the pliers or the strap, I finally bought a fabric strap style and got it off. You think it's tight to get to the filter on your dakotas? Try doing it on an 87 cutlass with headers.

I have a set of oil filter removers that go on a socket wrench. The ex gave me the set of Xmas one year probably about 10 years ago. 3 piece set and one has fit every filter Iv'e ever changed and they work quite well.

Always do it warm so the filter has a chance to expand. When putting on the new one, don't forget to lube the gasket and hand tighten just till snug, then 1/4 turn more.

LOL...try a first gen S10 with the 2.8...anyhow, never had a prob with the filter pliers, as I apply them to the base of the filter which, is the strongest part of the filter.

The directions on oil filter boxes say 3/4 turn after snug. I'd worry about it coming loose at 1/4 turn.

Hell at just snug the first time you fire the truck up it's suck right on. Been turning it a quarter past snug since before I was old enough for a driver's license and that was in the mid 80s. Never had a problem yet...

i had one on my dad's b2500 that i had completely demolished trying to get it off and even then i had to cut it off with a snips and pliers...luckily it didn't mess up the threads but i tried the wrench, that tool that Hammerz71 mentioned and everything under the sun...turned a 10min job into a 6hour job
