Idling Forward?
I swear something is not right here...I always have to hold the brake when I switch into drive or reverse (to and from neutral) because it "jumps" (auto tranny fyi) is that loose tranny belts?
If I take my foot off the brake even on an incline without touching the gas I will idle forward and pick up speed so braking on hills really seems to take more foot force then necessary.
Whenever I pull up to my house to back into my driveway I put it in neutral and roll to a mildly braked stopped, once completely stopped I put it in reverse (if you do not come to a complete stop that is what wears your automatic tranny clutch right??) SO I have noticed that braking while coasting in neutral is MUCH easier and smoother on the braking/stopping then coasting in drive...this is not right is it?

I already took a wrench to that screw on the electric selinoid and turned it in almost all the way, it SOUNDS to be idling a bit lower but I have no way of taking a reading. May be too low now though because it will stall out if I spin the tires up and do a burnout. Does your 90' brake easier coasting in neutral than drive?
Thanks!!
It's a habit for me whenever going from drive to reverse since neutral is in between them anyway.

I got it to idle forward slightly less!
Since I have no tach I really can't tell where my idle RPMs are at so everything is a guessing game. I think some people are onto something and my idle is turned up so I decided to try and crank it back down...which I'm not sure 100% how to do. I screwed the IAC screw pusher knub way back down/in and I will admit it does shift into and out of gear a bit smoother but still not where I think it should be, and that might not have been the correct way to adjust the idle? Now I am back to it starting up real choppy so I am now thinking possibly the idle was cranked up to compensate something else wrong with the choppy starting issue? It does not idle forward quite as aggressively now, but you can hear the engine idle up a little when I shift from drive into neutral before I backup. Is there a chance the starting issue is just a bad IAC; it works just not that "well" or does not extend fast enough or has lost some reach?

my 91 does the same thing(back before i tore it apart). i just assumed it was normal since everything i own does the same thing

It is always easier to brake in neutral than in drive. We often shift to neutral when trying to brake going down a hill as it is a lot more predictable and you stop sooner since your rear wheels aren't trying to push you around. This has been true in any rwd vehicle I've driven, Fwd less so.
Idling with your foot off the gas will always move your vehicle if it is in drive. Never had a vehicle that wouldn't do that.
Also rpms will always change when shifting between neutral and drive/reverse, it changes because of the load on the engine. This is normal again.
Lastly it is normal for these old transmissions to clunk a bit going into gear, they don't shift as smooth as modern transmissions. Mine chunks more going into reverse, and more when it is cold. Have you tried changing the tranny fluid?
If you think you are idling high don't fiddle with your iac, your idle speed is computer controlled, just install your iac according to the manual. You should be checking for vacuum leaks if you suspect a high idle.
I'd have to drive your truck to be sure, but sounds like you may be looking for an issue that isn't there. If you have concerns about the tranny shifting change the fluid/filter and go from there.

I drained what I could from the pan and put in synthetic ATF4 and a new filter about 5K ago. I want to just drop it for an AX or NV to be honest.
Idle is computer controlled you say? So there is no way to change it without messing up my startup?
