Actually in 91-down with the low powered LA engines it was common for some V8's to come with A500's.

What you say is "most" true in full sized pickups; there are plenty of Durangos Dakotas Grand Cherokees and even full sized vans I have seen with 318s in them, that do have the 500-based trans instead of the 518...

but what you say, 'should" be true if only on a common sense type basis.

I now have 2 518s here, one dead, one "supposed to" be good, the "supposed to be good" one is going into my 94 3.9 truck.
No V8 92-up ever came with an A500!!! Too weak, heck even to weak for some V6's.

92-95 V8s 5.2 and 5.9 came with 46rh.
96-up Some Ram V8 5.2 came with 46re along with all 5.9's. Some Ram V6's too.
96-up Dakota and Durango 5.2 came with 44re.

So I'm yet again confused. The trans in this 94 v8 magnum dakota rwd auto will or wont work with my 94 v6 magnum dakota rwd auto?

I just want to know what to get to get my truck up and running. How can I tell the difference between an a500 and an a518 while they are still mounted. I know I neeed to make sure rh not re by checking the connector behind and up from the neutral saftey switch. What else am I looking for on a visual inspection.

My other option is an a500 from a 93 but its a cable driven speed sensor (or whatever its called) would that work if I just changed over to my original sensor. I know I'm using incorrect terms so to clarify i am referring to the one that is bolted into the overdrive unit. My original extends maybe 6ish inches and has a 3wire connector coming off. The 93 has a 3inch unit with a cable running up and a 2 wire connector everything else is the same. Thanks for helping everyone.

I believe the 2 pin connector would mean that it just has overdrive and no lockup.

yes the one from the 94 V8 will directly swap into the 6 cyl truck.... the difference can be seen by looking at the pan. Just be sure to get the dipstick and tube and front inspection plate with the 518. otherwise bolts in exactly the same.

The speed sensor thing is extremely minor, on the 93 tranny. one 5/16 bolt (1/2" wrench head) and that whole thing comes out.
Youre gonna want tne one from "your" truck anyway in case the donor had a different rear end ratio... the little gear inside that speed sensor is how the speedo is calibrated for different tire sizes, gear ratios etc.

Awesome thank you for all the help guys greatly appreciate it. I think I'll go ahead and get the 518 they're both really clean but I figure the 518 is the stronger one.

So I've got the 518 trans off of a 1994 v8 dakota to put on my 94 v6 dakota the only thing I'm not sure of is while I am going to be changing the tc with the trans (using the one from the v8 a 310). Do I need the flexplate from the v8 aswell?

I had been told that I only needed the dipstick with tube and inspection plate from the donor truck. So now I'm siting with the trans in except for bolting the tc to the flex plate I got one bolt in no problem. But as I rotate the tc the other 3 holes don't match up 2 are about 1/4 inch off and the 3rd 1/2 inch off. I am just sorta at an impasse and not sure what to do. I'm sure hoping that I don't have to pull this trans back out. Is it possible that I am off in rotation of the tc? Do I need the Tc from the donor 5.2 v8?

Although I already answered, I might as well post up for others. You will need your engine specific flexplate or flywheel.

Something must not be lining up. Try to remove the the bolt you got on and turn it to line it up with another hole. Since your using you V6 flexplate and your old V6 TC it is a perfect match since it was once together.
