Default Replaced engine, runs but backfires and very little power

1994 dodge dakota v6

Found a replacement engine that is a 95, idled fine and rand fine after we put it in. On the drive home it would putt and sputter once and a while when giving it gas. After a few miles it would backfired and I received very little power and felt like it was missing bad.

We lost spark over night, but we are not sure if its timing or what is goin on.

Brand new fuel pimp, plugs and wires, crank sensor is new but for a 94 engine( should it be for a 95 or is that the same?)

Any suggestions or questions??

Sounds like its your ignition timing. The key is to time it when it's cold so it runs well drive t till its at optimal running heat (drive down the high way a few time or so) it should start sputtering again and feel like there is no power to it and just bogging. Retime it while its hot, make sure to tighten it as much as you can you should be good

We will attack the timing here today or tomorrow. Ty for your response Any idea why we lost spark at the spark plug wire overnight?

I'm worried the crank sensor for the a 94 may not be right for the 95 engine.

nope throw the above post out
You set timing with a scanner (they call it "sync") and warm-cold doesn't change that.
and 94-95 parst are the same Why was engine changed? how is plenum gasket? How are cap n rotor? Check all elec connections especially grounds again.

Old engine lost compression and had so many leaks.... Found a cheap engine with less miles and idled fine.

Cap and rotor are good, have not considered the plenum gasket.

That is unless these trucks are electronically timed, I've never done one this early.

on Magnum series engines (starting in 92) you DO NOT set timing with a timing light!!!! You need a scanner that is capable of "setting sync"
this "times" the distribtor pick up plate to the crank sensor. Same thing essentially but you HAVE to do it the right way;
on these engines "ignition timing" is taken care of by the crank sensor signal and the computer does the rest what you are doing by "setting sync" is adjusting exactly when" the injectors fire the fuel.
Please, if you don't know what you are talking about, STOP!
There are plenty here willing to help you learn, Cooreman, you'll get there someday.

Any idea why we may have lost spark overnight? All plugs wires and cap/rotor are good to go.

Can't really do much with timing until we can get that back...Ty for the help guys!
