Default 75/90amp and 120amp alternator interchange.

Do the smaller 75 and 90 amp alternators swap with the bigger 120 amp ones directly? I think I need the larger one. Running my newly installed mark VIII fan draws a lot of current and it really drops the voltage output on the gauge below the little * for where it normally sits and should be. Then running at night with all the lights, radio, plow lights, heat, and then move the plow around the voltage drops more. Especially moving the plow, it drops a lot more.

Thanks.

i got a 180 amp on my 92 and all i had to do from stock 80 was replace the power wire to a 2 gauge(min was 4)

i had mine actually rebuilt and beefed up locally so i saved the 500.00 US pricetag i seen looking online .. paid under 300 complete

reason i upped mine was that danged winch draws some serious power.. i also have 3 batteries (2 in the box of the truck)

here is a quick link so you see same for V6 and V8 thats a little cheaper then when i originally looked ....

I thought about getting mine redone at a higher amp, but I figured it'd be real pricy. I still might do it, but I can get a 120amp for $100 from the parts store. My question though is that the cases look different. I just want to make sure they mount the same and the wiring is the same.

wiring will depend on whats currently installed... more amps requires more gauge ... 180 requires(to be safe) 2 gauge were as 120 would be fine on say 4 gauge and 80 fine on 8 gauge (this is guestimate on gauge) but replaceing original wire and addign a stereo type breaker(what i did since i had it) is simple , i also left original connected aswell

also pictures might not be of actual unit, sometimes they do look different due to company that makes them,

I know the pics aren't always accurate, but these were the pic in the instore computer that were supposed to be of the actual item. Also both units were noted with different dimensions. I geuss I can always order it and return it if it isn't right.

assuming you got the 75 amp its prolly 8 gauge wire.. which in reality isnt enough but will work fine if less then 10 feet .. also the 120 will be a little bigger apparently

so yea stock wiring should be fine. source (made a call to my mechanic)

The 136 amp is easily found in most 5.9 V8 Rams and Durangos, if you have a U-Pull it type of junkyard that would be best. If you get it from around your year it will be a direct swap. And link mentioned earlier, increase the wire gauge (in size).

That is what I have, 136 amp, even with my winch that is enough. I've been wanting the 180amp though.

Is a 180 amp a factory unit or a modified one? And thanks for the heads up on the 136 amp.

There is a stock 160amp that only came on a few 5.9 Durango's. I have been searching it is rare. But you can buy replacement units for cheap. Here are some great info on the 136 and 160 amp alternators.
