Default Removing viscous clutch from water pump

'92 Dakota...3.9...Is there a special tool to hold water pump pulley from turning while removing the viscous radiator fan clutch from the threaded water pump shaft? Been trying the screwdriver between the pulley mount bolt thing and that is not working.

You've tried both forward and reverse? I don't know on a Dakota, but my Cougar is reverse-threaded IIRC.

What motor do you have? On my 94 3.9 the fan is not on the water pump. I didn't look closely and I've only had the front exposed once but this is what matters to remove the fan. I got it loose via a large cresent wrench and smacking it with a hammer no holdback. Leave the belt on until you get the fan nut loose. It only has to turn a little and it should go from there. I think it had to rotate clockwise to loosen since the motor turns clockwise and that would tighten the fan when running.

I wish I could help you but I've broken more than one over the years. I even knocked a hole in my radiator once trying to hit a pipe wrench.

Thank you all for the advice! Mark...at least you are honest! Lol! Anyway, called a local Dodge service department. They said left hand threads...but he said lefty loosely. After trying again, using special tools with no result....Looked up left hand threads...left hand threads are righty loosey.

FWIW: On my 90 4x4, the fan and fan clutch are bolted to the water pump and pulley with 4 small bolts.
Once the fan + clutch were removed, I clamped it in a bench vise to separate the fan from the clutch.

Of course 91 is when they made a bunch of changes... so YMMV

I remove the water pump with fan on it. clamp it in a vice, then its easy to remove the fan/clutch. And yes, left hand threads are reverse of what you expect.
