Default Manual Trans Compatibility

Are manual transmissions OBD sensitive like automatics are? Can I use a 97 5.2 manual on a 93? Or must it be the the same OBD ver?

Didn't you have a 42rh? If so trying to swap a manual in for an automatic will be alot of work...shifter changes, cutting the floor pan, possible tunnel changes, not to mention all the linkages, clutch plate, bearing change et al.

If you're talking about swapping an A578 for the A568 I'd have to ask why? The 568 is considered by many the best manual transmission.

It's not the OBD version (that's coincidental); it's the same family.

The 4xRH swap; the 4xRE swap; but swapping a hydraulic for an electronic (or vice versa!) requires control electronics that match the transmission.

(It just happened to have happened with the OBDII conversion for Dodge; Ford was already there with the AODE and 4R70W (electronic) replacing the AOD (hydraulic) around 1994.)

Didn't know that was a coincidence, good to know. My plan is to set money aside and put a t58 behind my 5.9. I saw a few writeups with the R/T Dakotas, should be about the same. My end goal is to put all the pieces in a short bed convertable.
It's near impossible to find manual parts for dakotas here though, gotta get then shipped.

T58? What's that? T-56 born warner like on the srt10? Won't fit a 5.9L. Do you mean a 46RE? That's what was mated to the dodge R/T. You can easily put a 5.9L/46RE in a vert....just be sure to grab the wiring harness and ecm from the donor truck.

The T-56 can be fitted to a 5.9; they used to stick them behind the LA block 360s.

And if nothing else, you can check out what Tremec sells.

Can is the operative word....I should have been more clear...won't fit as a direct swap. Like anything enough time and money anything can be adapted. If you really want to put a t56 behind a 360 this thread details alot of the work required...

*frowns* Shouldn't be too much work.

There's the bell housing to a T56. Clutch may need to be carefully picked. You should be able to use the hydraulics out of a stocker 5 speed.

Cross member may need to be tweaked or custom made; but that's pretty much a given with any non-factory transmission IMO.

Also, a custom drive shaft; but again, most folks will want to custom even if it's not a custom transmission if they're beefing it up any.

Don't forget he's starting with an automatic truck.
