OK at my wits end on this truck
3.9l 1996 Dakota
Was intermittently stalling now will crank but no start
Here is the list of I did
Replaced:
IAC, Crank Sensor, Cam Sensor, Coil, Rotor, Battery, PCM, all relays

Checked: Voltage to Fuel Pump Good, Removed Fuel line at fuel rail and gas is pumping
No voltage to coil, checked with spark tester and tested at connector with multi meter- No voltage
Checked infamous splice under the relay box... it was good

Check codes with OBDII- No codes
Only thing I can think of that's left is... I got a bad out of the box part (but would think I would get a code)
Possibly a timing chain

For the sake of all that is good and Holy, please help my impending mental breakdown

 

Check the voltage TO the fuel pump and ASD relays.

Then check the continuity from the ASD to the coil.

Also, the FSM with all the wiring diagrams is over in the FAQ (well, a link to a Google Drive share of it anyway). Grab that and walk through its troubleshooting tree.

When you say "Checked infamous splice under the relay box ... it was good" how did you check it? Look at the outside? Follow the wiring diagrams and verify that the voltage went through it down all the trees?

Thanks for responding, I will check those things asap. The splice looked as though someone had previously fix it, I probed the single wore going back to the fuel pump and had voltage.

 

Remember - if you check the wiring diagram, the ASD and fuel pump are separate relays, even though both are controlled by the ASD signal from the ECU (which grounds the control leg). So the other side of the coil should have 12V during crank and run, and for a few seconds when you first turn to "ON" with the ignition.

These trucks are notorious for not likely aftermarket crank sensors, ESPECIALLY the V-6.......

Try this: Turn the key to 'on', you should hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds, crank the engine, does the fuel pump run some more?

 

I took the line off at the fuel rail and gas was pumping

 

Will it start pumping again if you crank the motor?

 

Had a 96 same thing happened, bought a bunch of sensors online, still dead after installation, replaced cam and crank sensors with ones off running junkyard engine, engine started. Some of this stuff you buy new is probably made by monkeys in someone's cellar---

I bought a knockoff crank Sensor and cam sensor (unusual for me but I was desperate) from Advanced Auto. They were BWD brand. Been 14+ months and I haven't had a problem with either one. Knock on wood. I did keep the old/original parts since it turns out they were still good. I have a 1993 Dakota, 5.2L.
