Default T-Case swap

Hey y’all, I need to change the transfer case on my 97 Dodge Dakota 3.9l, 5spd manual

I just got the old one pulled,

It’s a 231j, I’m having trouble finding a replacement, I’ve seen online that with jeeps you could interchange the 231 and the 242, is that true with the Dakota?

Here’s the one I just pulled.. pretty messed up

If its an NP231J then it came out of a Jeep. An NP231D is out of a Dodge.

Oh okay, interesting. Do you know if the 342 would work?

A np242 will bolt up if it has the correct input shaft, but then you will have 5 shifter positions instead of 4 which may not be a problem. If it was me I would try to find an NP231, I had a couple NP242s in Jeeps and I wasn't a fan of them, I swapped the NP242 out for an NP231 on the Jeep I have now.

Okay that’s good to know, at the moment I’m just trying to get the truck running so I have a vehicle so it might just be worth it. I’m finding the 242 are a lot easier to come by than the 231s. However if I can find a 231 I’ll use it. Any recommendations on where I could find one under 300$?
