Default Where to buy Upper & Lower control arms

Hi folks,

With 250,000 it may be a bit beyond the expiration date of the bushings and ball joints of this 1989.

The shop recommended that I source the whole Upper and Lower Control Arm Assemblies as it would include the parts that I need and that would save a ton on labor in doing a rebuild.

I can't seem to find a source online. If anyone knows who is selling the aftermarket parts for this (complete upper and lower control arm assembly), I would appreciate you sharing that information.

Thanks!

2 WD or 4wd?
I know 4 WD is not available new.
Can get new ball joints and use a 97 poly bushing kit. There is a small modification to be made......... Can link it for you if interested.
At least this is the way on a 4wd

@93ragtop - It's a 2wd. So yes, please do provide the link so that I could look.,

From what I read, I believe that you are suggesting parts for a rebuild rather than complete assembly. But if that's all that's available, then I'll have to go that way.

2wd is different from what I described above. The standard bushing kits and ball joints are available ........ I seen them at rockauto.com
one other bit of info. The top ball joints screw in, not pressed. Bottom I'm not sure about on a 2wd.

Although available for many vehicles, there are no off the shelf UCA or LCA for the 2WD 1st gen Dakotas. Ive heard rumors of using (but cant confirm) the UCA and LCA for 97-04 but it requires a spindle swap too

Moog DOES list the upper control arms; but they tend to be Out Of Stock most of the time.

So, yes, it's usually rebuild time.

If down time is a problem, I'd order a set of control arms or pick some up at a boneyard ( car-part.com and hollanderparts.com are both wrecking yard aggregators; hit them up) and rebuild those, then swap them for the current ones and later rebuild THOSE. Rinse, lather, repeat.

(What? They're wearing items; of COURSE they need replacing every so often. I'd figure every 100,000 to 125,000 miles if you keep up on the maintenance of the greaseable. Not sure about the permalubed ones.)

Here are my findings:

As @snowman451 and @ralphp stated, Moog did make the Upper Left and Right Control Arm. But no longer. And yes, they tend to be out of stock for that reason. If you were to find them, then the Moog parts numbers would be: Upper Right - RK623220 and Upper Left - RK623221 But good luck with that.

No one that I could find made lower control arms. @RalphP's idea of getting a set of used arms (upper and lower) is great. But I'm going the shop route. The good things is they are letting me source the parts and the shop that I am dealing with is reasonable on labor.

FOR THOSE LOOKING TO REBUILD GEN1 2WD SPORT SUSPENSION you may find these part #'s of interest. You may choose to get other items, but this is what I ordered for mine:
.
Front Left Upper Control Arm Rebuild parts

* Front Upper Ball Joint – Moog, 2 @ K778

* Front Upper Bushings – Moog, 2 @ K7084 (each kit contains 2 bushings)

* Front Upper Bumper – Moog, 2 @ K7293 (kit comes with bumper and bolt)

Front Lower Control Arm Rebuild parts

* Front Lower Ball Joint – Moog, 2 @ K7025

* Front Lower Bushing Kit – Moog, 1 @ K7194 (contains 2 front, 2 back)

Stabilizer Bar parts

· Stabilizer Bar Bushings – Moog, 1 @ K5227 (contains 2 bushings)

· Stabilizer Bar Link Kit – Moog, 2 @ K700531
.

Since I am getting all that up, then I may as well throw this into the mix:

Shocks

* Front - Monroe 2 @ 32214

* Rear – Monroe, 2 @ 32215

Moog still makes reproduction gen 1 upper rwd control arms.

In my case 4x4 not so much, you're going to have to buy 2-3 pairs from used trucks (car-part.com), attempt to remove the ball joint on all of them and hope atleast one of the pairs don't end up getting warped. Bushings? I threw mine on a grill of an open fire to burn the shot bushings out. Avoid using the frame of your truck when removing ball joint. Bad things might happen. I went to a used construction material salvage yard and got an I beam, drilled holes in it, mounted the upper control arm, wedge it between two trees. Used a stupid long 3/4" breaker bar with another pipe on. Thought I was going to break my breaker bar. Such a stupid design....

I heard with some modifications, you can use gen 2 upper control arms. Do some research before trying this though.

Moog MADE reproduction gen 1 upper rwd control arms. Finding them now is like finding a diamond on a beach.

That is why I am going the rebuild route. By ordering everything online, I am getting shocks (front & back, all bushing and ball joints (left, right, top and bottom) and a rack & pinion unit and hoses for about $500 total. (As I said above that did include a Moog upper right control arm assembly, which I happened to find when someone cleaned out their old stock and put it on eBay.)

The hardest part so far is patience. I need to get all the parts delivered before I can take it to the shop.
