Default 5 speed(ax-15) loud gear roll over

Hello guys,
I just bought a 1995 Dakota Sport with 142k miles on it. It has the 3.9L, 5 speed trans, and 4x4.
This might be a tired topic, but is the ax-15(I'm assuming it's an ax-15) just a noisy transmission? I get a pretty loud whirring/rollover noise when accelerating and especially while engine braking. It seems to be around town and in 1-3. 4-5 the road noise might just be taking over. I've checked the transfuid at the fill port, the transfer case, and even the rear end. All goodI've seen the the jeep guys with the ax-15 like to run 10w-30 full synthetic... That also might be a tired topic, but what do you all think of running a grade as thin as that?
Thanks for any and all input!

I bought the truck as-is, so I likely won't even get a few words out before they hang up. Thanks for the reply though.
I'm going to try running 10w-30 and see how that goes. A lot of other applications had the ax-15 and people say that 10w30 synthetic is the best lube for this trans...

What oil does your owners manual call for?
Just a quick internet check seems to show 75-90.........
If 75-90 is correct, I would be concerned that the thin oil could cause premature wear, not to mention noise.

The Hayes service manual I have calls for 10w-30. I've been digging through the jeep forums and it seem that a majority use 10w-30 full syn. A lot also use redline mt90.

I'm going to drain the trans and check for metal shavings. The oil in there seems to be rather tacky like 75w 90.

I use 15W40 diesel oil in mine, take the shifter off and dump a whole gallon in, no noise or issues at all.

Interesting! I ended up using full synthetic mobile 1 10w-30. It took almost 4qts... Which is odd. I thought the fill spec was 2qt. Anyway, I think it shifts a little smoother and possibly might be more quiet.

one of the biggest mistakes you can make is listening to baffoons of the jeep community. FSM calls for gl5. 75w90 to be specific. 80w90 also works well but has a bit higher cold viscosity. if your following what ive said so far then great. if your lost ,sorry i dont have time to write a book and explain it.
theres zero reson to have motor oil in that ax15 and i wouldnt be a bit suprised if it starts rattleing like crazy.
get yourself the FSM so youll have a clue what your doing

Whoa... whoa... Easy... The Haynes repair manual calls for 10w-30.
No one asked you to write a book.
Also, if you'd slow down and read my posts your know it was making noise the day I bought it and definitely had something like 75w-90 in it.
Now, Since I've put full synthetic 10w30 it's shifted much better.

Thanks for your... Ehm... Reply.
