Carburetor wiring help request for 1987 3.9L carburetor
Hello all, my name is Jack and I am in Fresno, CA. It's a long long story that started in 1986 when I bought this truck. I would be glad to swap stories with anyone who has nursed an 87 through smog tests over the years. I modified a Holley 2280 carb to work on this truck when I got tired of dealing with the sticky solenoid on the stock 6280, and no new ones were available for replacement. It worked pretty good. I learned how to adjust it to pass smog, but the standards have been made stricter twice since it was new and it is becoming much more difficult to pass. I managed to snag a new 6280 a few years ago, not specifically for this truck, but probably will run it cleaner than the non-feedback-solenoid 2280.
I could use some help with the wiring that comes from the feedback solenoid, the A/C vacuum assist and the idle stop switch, all mounted on the carb, four wires altogether. This is on a California model, other models may have only three wires, but anything will help. I could use some photos of the plug and receptacle that are about a foot or so from where they originate, preferably from the rear of each, showing where the wires enter. Barring that, detailed description would be helpful as well, but one picture is worth a thousand words, as they say.
I have the hard-copy shop manual, but the wiring diagram for the carb does not indicate the same colors for the wires as on my truck. For instance, the manual shows the wiring from the solenoid as DG and DB, which I assume is is dark green and dark blue, and the wires on the solenoid that came stock, and every solenoid that I have come across, are tan/pink and light green. Thanks for reading this far and I would greatly appreciate any help that anyone has to offer. ~Jack
Have a look here. Yes, it's a russian site, but, I have been using it for some time no, with no issues. Don't know if the colors will be any more accurate though. I would think, the service manual would have a separate page for the California trucks though.... there can be major differences between cali emissions, and federal.
Thank you, HeyYou. The Mitchell on Demand electrical diagram was easier to read than the service manual, but it showed the same color disparity in the wiring as the service manual. The service manual does not make a distinction between federal and California models, so I think it just shows federal.
The problem is that I pulled the wires out of the jack on the original 6280 carb (long gone) in order to use the jack with the 2280, and I did not take photos at the time. I fear that if I reverse the wires on the feedback solenoid I run the risk of having the solenoid opening when it should be closing, which would really screw up the air/fuel mixture. I doubt that any damage would be done, but I want to see if I can dig up something to go by.
I suppose there is one why to find out: hook 12 volts up to the solenoid wires. If it clicks It is hook up correctly. Reverse polarity and if it clicks that way also, then polarity doesn't matter. As I recall the solenoid is closed in the resting position, and opens when voltage is applied. I also have the Diagnostic Readout, Miller Tool C-4805. I can use it to activate the solenoid. It's all coming back to me.
May just have to go by where the wires go, rather than color then....
I believe you are right. I can piece together the wiring using the manual and the Russian site. I will let you know how it turns out. I might not get to it for a few weeks but I will definitely get it done.
