It was about a month ago. I had my intermittents on and they acted weird. It's like they went from intermittent mode to slow mode. They kept going without pause. I turned them off and then on again and problem went away ever since. I passed it off as a senior moment...after all my truck is 31 years old. So that might be another sign that smart switch is on the out.

Changed out the turn signal switch (multi switch, smart switch whatever we're calling it). Easy job except I don't have a T20 torx on a long handle to remove the screws in the clam shell around the steering column. Need about 4" to get up in the pilot hole to reach the screw head. I only have socket torx and also the kind you drop a bit in a handle. Neither will get in that pilot. I have a T25 on a long handle and somehow I made that work getting them out and one of them back in. Can't tighten up the last one tho...I'll do that another time when I get the tool. Also need security/tamper proof torx for the switch mounting screws. I have those.

Gotta use more force to turn on the directionals and brights but I understand that wears in eventually. Everything works on it. One thing I noticed immediately is my voltage gauge on the dash doesn't flicker nearly as much as before when the directionals are on. Barely flickers now. Also, the stem has much less play in it. The old one you could wobble it around some. Not so much with the new one. That'll probably change with time too. So we'll see how it goes if this solves my mysterious problem with the headlights going out and back on without warning. Time will tell.

Thanks Old Grouch.

You're welcome. I remember the first time I ran into this issue. I also wasn't used to the dimmer switch there. I got my feet wrapped around the steering wheel when I tried to dim my headlights.
