Default Suspension upgrade?

I have an 88 2wd V6 long box. I have the opportunity to grab the leaf springs off an 88 D350....any idea if this would be a straight swap...or even smart? Lol I want to increase load capacity but not truck size

If you have a dakota, I doubt springs from a full size are gonna fit. On the 2nd gen full size trucks, the one tons were 3" wide, vs everything else being 2.5, which would mean they won't even fit into your spring hangars... not to mention the spring pad on the axle itself.

That, and it takes more than just springs to increase your load rating. The one ton trucks also had a heavier frame..... If you want to haul more than your current truck is capable of, sell it, and buy something that actually (legally.....) meets your needs.

I did measure the D350, they are 2.5" wide and just measured the Dakota which is the same...but the 350 is 5"shorter in overall length but the rear diff is removed so not under any tension.

I hear what you're saying about upgrading but I love the little guy too much. Just want a few hundred more pounds for camper...

Decent idea, i'll look into that!

I did look on rock auto and they have the measurements for the springs and you're right, i'd have to move the mounting brackets which is far more effort than it's worth but i did see they have a spring helper kit that looks interesting

https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...lDF1XM2vFcQ%3D

ever try anything like this?

Helper springs make the ride rougher when you aren't loaded. Air bags maintain the stock ride, just put some air in 'em when heavily loaded. Still rides decent.

FWIW I replaced my leaf springs with a new set and new bushings. It rides better especially around curves ??? but the load bearing did not improve. I put a half yard of dirt in it and it still dropped just as low and acted the same.
I have a small truck I added helper springs to. Hey You is correct it rides hard empty but it also handles better under load. I use it for gravel , dirt and lumber when I need it.
