Removed 60 pin connector on PCM, now engine runs like crap.
Popping thru the intake, major stumble, no power at times.
I want to thank Crazy for the pic of that connector, then found it in my FSM, DUHH!
This is why I’m finally looking thru the FAQs! Only took me 5 yrs to figure this out?
I was looking at the 60-pin connector on the PCM. Going to back to probe wires. THEN I made a big mistake of removing the connector. Anyway, looking at the openings of the female pins, some of them appear to be spread open a little, so it's time to pinch some closed a little.
What are these connectors called, Metri-pak, Weather-pack, Duetsch, Etc….
I remembered that when I removed the pcm connector, it didn’t raise or move out evenly, while loosening the attaching 5/16s bolt. The front of the connector pulled up, so the connector was at an angle, front higher, rear lower. I’m the at fault guy that made the pins open a little, evidently just enough to cause drivability issues.
Accessing the pins is a PITA I’m not familiar with these types of connections. The outside cover came off easily, the cover that holds the rubber thing in the back, acts like a press fit. I broke it a little bit. PCM Connection, 1st cover Broken Bit, moisture barrier retainer, feels like a press fit or not supposed to be removed ? Spread pins and cracked orange pin lock thing
is cracked in a few places.
Make sure all the pins are pushed all the way in. The tend to come loose, and when you plug it back in, it just pushes the wire-side connector out......
Thank you, HeyYou, I'll do that. Yes, in the connector, it looked like a few were recessed. I was looking for a similar pin size for a try pin, so when I crimp them a little, it's easier then trying to reach into the PCM receptacle. Except all of my pins are solid #16 for the Deutsch connectors. The PCM pins are closer to a #18 size folded pin. I found some folded or stamped #18 pins on that amazon place. I have an Iwis crimper set. . I wrestled with pulling the cover off for about 3 hrs, didn't want to break it too badly. Was thinking about some silicone spray, went into the shop and spotted the diluted soap spray hanging on the oxygen bottle, cussing myself for not trying it 3 hrs ago. Yes, spray away from the PCM! Maybe I won't put the seal back in till after I check to make sure pins are seated. I'll look at my pin removal tools to see if one of them can be used to seat the pins after the rubber is installed. i reliised it's hard to tell size in the picture, the red remover is about 1/8in.
Did I look at this correctly? The FAQs 60-pin connector pin number "positions" in the connector itself are different Than my 93 FSM schematic pin positions and again different than "my" 94 Dakota pins positions. The Diagram I pulled from the FAQs. Closer up of the same connector My 93 FSM Blower up of 93 FSM connector. The top left numbers above pink stripe are my 94 connector pins, the # 1 pin is a DG/RD wire, #2 is TN/BK, the #3 is a RD/WHT wire Batt + with the connector removed from the PCM. It doesn't matter if you view it from the the wire side or from the face side.
You know, what they say, It was running when parked ! I wiped silicone grease on the sides and face of the connector, then pushed it into place, (or threaded). Then used one of the pin tools to seat the pins that were pushed out. There were at least 8 pins not seated. Then checked the rest of them to make sure they're seated also. I haven't installed the orange rubber yet; I want to test drive it first.
Not only that but if those thin little plastic retaining clips in the terminal cavities are broken those terminals will not slide over the male receiving pins. They'll just get pushed out...perhaps what you're referring to.
You are both correct. That picture was before I plugged it in and pushed all the pins in. 8 or 10 of those little clips are broken. Really brittle. Pins wouldn't come out if I just pried the clip a little, trying not to break any. Moving the clip just enough to slide the pin out would break them off.
In that picture, I was trying to show the # 1, 2, 3 pins, and all the rest aren't where my FSM shows them. The picture shows the top left of the plug when it would be plugged in. The index notches are on the side that's clamped against the wood, so I could work on it.
I took it for a little drive and it runs more gooder.
