Superchips ? Worth it
Hey any of you put a superchips tuner in your rig. I have a bone stock 2001 durango R/T. I am interested in any feedback on the 87 octane tune setting, what kind of gains in MPG ? Any performance to speak of ?
Worse than stock. Plus it says you are only supposed to tow like 2,000 pounds using the 87 octane setting iirc.
If the tune for the 5.9 is anything like the Hemi tune, I found that it is actually more economical to run the performance tune with 93 octane gas. The more advanced timing gave me better fuel economy, so much so that it offset the price difference in gas. I did quite extensive testing on this in the fall of '06. I found that with gas prices at the time, and with 93 octane running at an average of 28 cents more per gallon, it actually was costing me about four cents less per mile to drive with the performance tune and high test than with the economy tune and 87 octane gas. Of course, you gotta learn to stay off it with added power gains.
And in my opinion, even without the HP & Torque gains, the speedo recalibration and the ability to read & clear codes, the unit was worth the price to me for just the firmer transmission shifts...

I saw a BIG drop in MPG in the 93 octane setting. Like at least 2 mpg.
