Question 3rd Gear in the 46re Transmission

I have not been able to figure out how to manually select and hold 3rd gear for towing. The only way I can get it is to turn OD off which puts it into 4th. Then turn OD back on which puts it into 3rd until the tranny decides it down't need it anymore. The other way is to leave OD on and mash the gas to force it to downshift. Problem is that I have to keep mashing the gas when sometimes it's not really necessary.

I would like to be able to manually select 3rd and use it as I feel necessary without having to keep my foot in it.

Well thats the issue 3rd is actually 1 to 1. But its only words to me so i cant assure you anything. Off the bat though i'd recomend a band adjustment (which would accompany a fluid and filter) if you think somethings off.

Instead of blind answers, heres something to tickle your fancy.

isn't the 46re an electronic tranny? no bands?

as for holding third gear, you are pretty much SOL with that.. The tranny will respond to its power needs.. There may be an aftermarket controller you can buy that will allow for custom shift points, and gear selection override..

edit.. my mistake, i believe its 45rfe thats electronically controlled..

I've only felt 4 gears not 5. 3rd gear is OD off. 4th is OD. I know that the 727 is a 3 speed and that's basically what you have with OD.

Actually, the 5.9 is teamed with the 46re tranny which is a 4-speed with OD. If you turn OD off and start from a stand still you can count the four gears. If you turn OD on after it has finished shifting you will feel it go into OD and watch the rpms decrease.

The 46re is (4) speed (6) strength rating (R) rear wheel drive (E) electronically controlled. Basically a 3 spd 727 with an overdrive 4th speed. The last drop in RPM is the lock-up converter locking up. If you turn the OD off you will be in third gear.

Well put vindicated I forgot to update my post on this. Three speeds plus OD confirmed.
